This year’s Geography Photography Competition once again tied in with our school’s collaboration with UNICEF, supporting learning around the Global Challenge for the 2018/19 academic year and the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
Students were asked to submit their best photo on the theme of “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” and explain in 50 words why the photograph was taken and how it fits the geographical theme.
From the entries across both the primary and secondary schools, age group winners were chosen and put forward to represent BIS HCMC in the Global Campus Photographer of the Year 2018/19 competition.
Our congratulations go to Lo Lo Pham and Jane Tran who were among 60 global shortlisted entries! This means their photographs will be published in the Global Campus Calendar that will be distributed to all 56 Nord Anglia Education schools around the world in January 2019!

We all need sleep and when we are sleeping can be relaxed and peaceful. If we surround ourselves with things that comfort us we are more likely to get a good night rest.
This photograph depicts a beggar sitting by a street mural which urges people to ‘live gently upon this earth.’ The irony and injustice in this is inescapable. The words on the mural were evidently written by someone who has the privilege and the means to choose to ‘live gently’. Meanwhile, the beggar squatting against that wall with all his belongings crammed into a tattered green bag, is one of the millions for whom living gently, almost on nothing, is the only choice.
This picture shows a simple barn in a small town of Pavirinčiai where a farmer is seen harvesting crops. This picture shows peace because that farmer couldn’t harvest crops correctly mid-war or during a fight with loved ones or even while struggling with anxiety. The only way for the farmer to do this right is for him to be free both physically, and mentally.
A brother and sister (84 and 92 years old respectively) live in a hidden alley in the heart of Saigon. Together, with their feet crossed, one with flip flops and one without, they have witnessed the French colonization, the fall of the South, and the union of Vietnam.
I took this picture on the coast a few years ago during a family trip. The picture of the sunset depicts the peace. The harmony of colours such as orange, yellow and blue creates a feeling of calmness and serenity.
The students and the monks in front of a historical site represent a strong institution because they are learning their religion and the history of their country. Moreover, the monks teach the students that one of the main values of Buddhism is non-violence. All the students wear the white clothes in order to delete the social difference.
Spotted at 5pm every day is a boy feeding the pigeons near the Notre-Dame Cathedral. With such a simple gesture, he brings a sense of peace - spreading the seeds evenly with thoughtfulness and an idea of justice that every child should be care-free and deserves all the love, care and happiness.
A huge well done to all students who participated in this year’s competition. The quality of the photographs we received was outstanding and more importantly, they help to spread awareness of the importance of reaching Global Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 11 class of 2024, for their impressive IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) results. This incredible cohort of 155 students, our largest IGCSE class in the history of the school, have significantly surpassed UK and international averages and were awarded 97% of all grades at A*-C. An incredible 62% of all grades awarded were at A*-A.
