Student-athlete Jeremie commits to the University of Michigan

As we approach the end of the 2017/18 academic year here at BIS HCMC, we are looking ahead to what the future holds for our outgoing Year 13 IB Diploma students. In this post, we talk to student-swimmer Jeremie Luong. Jeremie has been a student at BIS since 2012 and in this time we have watched him flourish into the exceptional swimmer that he is today. He has over 100 medals to his name and is a member of the Vietnamese National Swimming Team but soon he will start a new phase of his student-athlete journey in the USA as part of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team. Let's find out more...

Tell us about your offer at the University of Michigan…

This process began when I started my IB Diploma Programme in October 2016. I contacted swimming coaches from a selection of universities in the US. Over the following year I exchanged information via emails and video calls with each of the coaches. They got to know me better as a person, as a student and as a swimmer. For me, I was able to learn more about the University’s programmes as well as the NCAA Championship.

At the end of this process, I decided to verbally commit to the University of Michigan as I believed it was the best fit for me. It is one of the top institutions in the US for Engineering coupled with world-class facilities for training, an amazing coaching and swimming team with several Olympians to its name.

I went on a recruiting trip in February which confirmed to me that the University of Michigan was definitely where I wanted to spend the next 4 years.

How does it feel to be coming to the end of your time at BIS HCMC?

I have been part of the BIS community for 6 years now and as any Year 13 student would say, it has been an amazing ride!

Thanks for everything!!! I’ll never forget all the support I’ve received over the years!!! I’ll make sure to visit :)) #gobarracudas - Jeremie

Being a student-athlete is a huge constraint in term of time management and I couldn't do it without the amazing support I’ve received from my teachers and the athletics department, but also from the administration and all my friends. I had the chance to represent BIS in countless swim meets including the annual Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Invitational for which my last meet in December 2017 was very emotional as it really hit me that I was coming to the end of something.

Last weekend’s ISHCMC Invitational was my last competition for the BIS Barracudas but this team will remain forever in my heart as my swimming family.

Even though I am coming to the end of some of the best years of my life, I am equally excited by what lies ahead of me and the opportunities that will open up to me at the University of Michigan.

After I finish my IB exams I will be flying to the University of Michigan to start a month of training before heading back to Asia to represent Vietnam at the Southeast Asian Age Group in the Philippines between the 6th and 8th of July. Then I will compete at the Long Course Nationals at the end of July before enjoying 2 weeks break with my family.

In August I will head back to the University of Michigan to start a new chapter of my student-athlete life.

We feel privileged to have been a part of Jeremie's journey so far. He is a fantastic role model for younger BIS students and shows that with ambition and determination there is no limit to what you can achieve.

From the entire BIS Community we wish Jeremie the best of luck on his next chapter at the University of Michigan and don't forget Jeremie...
