In efforts to make Maths more compelling and applicable to younger students, we, the Student Maths Leaders, have organised various problem solving activities with the Year 6 children to challenge their creative thinking in a collaborative environment.
The challenges we have run over the past few weeks ranged from a Code-breaking Murder Mystery, Coordinate Battleships, Matchsticks Puzzles to Tangrams. The Year 6 children truly surprised us with their continuous enthusiasm, perseverance and ingenuity.
This week’s challenge included calculating the volume of some mind-boggling shapes and drawing them isometrically on paper. Next week, which is unfortunately our final session, we have organised a very memorable team-based problem solving activity involving marshmallows!
We, the Student Maths Leaders, are a team of Year 12s with a desire to spread our passion for Maths in BIS HCMC: aside from these Masterclasses, we have organized the infamous Pi Day Challenge and are hosting the citywide Junior Logic Competition in May.

A whole world of possibilities awaits our graduating class of 2023. With 385 university offers so far, and many more still to come from Korea, Australia and Singapore, their remarkable IBDP achievements have opened pathways to some of the best universities and specialist institutions across the globe.
Last week two of our students, JaeYeon and Caitlin, joined over 100 NAE student delegates from around the world at the NAE-UNICEF Student Summit in New York City. This was an extraordinary opportunity for them to develop their leadership and advocacy skills and collaborate with like-minded students to cultivate their social purpose through the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
