Our Instrumental Programme offers students an extraordinary opportunity to explore and master a range of musical instruments, fostering a lifelong love for music and enhancing their cognitive and creative development.

Year 5 Instrument Selection Process

In Year 5, students embark on an exciting journey to find the instrument that resonates with them. They engage in a comprehensive cycle where they learn about different instruments, experiencing firsthand how each one sounds and feels, having the chance to have a go at playing each instrument in a one hour lesson. This hands-on approach not only helps them understand the basics of playing but also allows them to make an informed choice about which instrument best suits their interests and physical abilities.

Music science tells us that the physical demands of certain instruments—such as breath control for wind instruments or finger dexterity for string instruments—can influence a student's ease of play. Therefore, our expert instrumental teachers guide students to find the instrument that aligns with their natural abilities, ensuring a positive and successful learning experience.

Once a student selects their instrument, they begin dedicated lessons, continuing their studies through to Year 9. We strongly encourage continuity, as switching instruments requires starting from scratch, which could result in the need to catch up. However, if a student wishes to change instruments, we support their decision by recommending private lessons through the STA Music Academy to ensure they are well-prepared to transition.

For New Students

New students joining St Andrews after the initial selection process are given the opportunity to choose an instrument. While we strive to accommodate their first choice, availability may be limited due to class sizes. Nonetheless, we make every effort to ensure that each student finds an instrument they are passionate about.

For students who find themselves drawn to the broader world of music, we offer an inclusive alternative called Young Producers, delivered through music technology. This pathway allows students with a keen interest in studio work, sound engineering, and digital music production to fully engage with our music programme, broadening their understanding of music beyond traditional instruments.

Expert Instruction and Comprehensive Curriculum

Each student is paired with a dedicated, experienced teacher who specializes in their chosen instrument. Instruction includes not only technical proficiency and music theory but also ensemble playing, which is an integral part of school performances. In addition to their instrumental lessons, students explore ensemble work, world music, composition, band skills, and general musicianship in their other music classes.

The STA Instrumental Programme is more than just music lessons; it is a gateway to creativity, discipline, and joy. We invite parents and students to embrace this remarkable opportunity and join a community where music is not just learned, but lived.

In addition to their instrumental lessons, students explore ensemble work, world music, composition, band skills, and general musicianship in their other music classes and have the opportunity to access materials created through access to the Juilliard Approach to K–12 Classroom Instruction.
