Welcome to the Movement Matters Dance Showcase, a celebration of rhythm, expression and the boundless language of movement. Tonight, we invite you to join us in our journey through dance, where we explore every matter of movement. May each intricate footwork, powerful gestures, smooth flow and transitions, and creative composition hold the power to evoke your emotions, convey your stories, and ignite your imagination.

Tonight you will witness the convergence of talent, passion and dedication from our dancers who embody the essence of this showcase. May we draw you into our world where every movement matters. We hope you enjoy the show.

Hip Hop Company

This dance performance is set to the captivating song "Woman" (Oh Mama) by Joy Williams. It celebrates the indomitable spirit of women as heroes. It celebrates their strength, determination, and unwavering spirit. The dancers serve as a powerful reminder of the countless ways in which women rise as heroes, inspiring and uplifting others with their remarkable presence.

IB Dance Year 12

“Tell Me” is a contemporary dance piece that explores contact work which involves the relationship between one’s body to others by using the fundamentals of weight, touch, and movement. The duet is performed by Hana and Isabell, Y12 IB Dance students.

Bust a Groove

Junior Varsity Hip Hop

A fun and energetic Hip Hop performance from our Junior Varsity team. It is centred around the idea of a weekend hang out with friends and how music and dance have the power to unite us all and maybe even give us the confidence to ‘bust a move’.

False Confidence

IB Year 12 Composition (Hana)

‘False Confidence’ is about one's outlook on themselves and their life. It is based on the idea of self-esteem and self-assurance. Someone who was happy and fulfilled is now drained and insecure. No emotion, just a feeling of emptiness. Their recovery journey is displayed from slow to fast, with anger and sadness, and spinning out of control. Just like life, this dance makes a full circle. They are exactly where they started before.

Frenemies

Y11 GCSE Trio

Frenemies is a GCSE Dance Performance exam work performed by Tai, Tayla, and So Yoon. This piece explores the dark secrets shared by three close friends, one of whom is a covert narcissist. The narcissist is provoked by the sudden urge for attention and is magnified towards the end. Manipulation, control, and contrasting movements are demonstrated throughout the dance which symbolises the toxicity and unknowingness of the interactions between the trio.

Skin

Y10 GCSE

“Skin” is a dance piece composed by the Y10 GCSE class. It explores the ability to express oneself and find confidence in their skin, hence the title. The choreography shows that everyone is connected through the stimulus, however, it differentiates within how the dancers interpret it and portray it through different dance styles, such as contemporary, street jazz, lyrical and classical elements which are incorporated in it as well.

Spotlight

Y11 GCSE Trio

“Spotlight” is a GCSE Dance Performance Exam piece performed by Bam Bam, Misa, and Pong. It is centred around the idea of ‘Sibling rivalry’ and the fight for the spotlight. It is explored through constant formation switches of who takes centre stage and moments of solos and duets that highlight the tension between siblings. Will the siblings find a solution to share the spotlight? Or will it be an endless battle to take on the centre stage?

Seven Days

Junior Varsity

“Seven Days” is performed by the Junior Varsity dance team. The choreography is a collaboration between the dancers and the teacher, which allows the students to structure and implement their ideas into the dance. The dance piece explores improvisation, Graham's dance technique, motif development and repetition.

What’s Up Danger?

Varsity Dance Team

This is a hip-hop piece performed by the Varsity Dance Team. Inspired by the song ‘What’s Up Danger’ by Black Caviar and Blackway, this piece explores two opposing riot squads in the midst of escaping authorities. They meet each other while escaping and start a fight. Contact work, floorwork, powerful gestures, and elevation are explored throughout the piece to bring to life the thrill of what it means to live on the edge and always welcome danger.

What was I made for?

IB Year 12 Composition (Izzy)

Inspired by the “What Was I Made For?” song by Billie Eilish, this composition is about a person’s struggle to find their purpose in life. During a process of self-discovery, one must go through multiple self-reflections regarding one’s decisions and values. This contemporary piece will showcase the constant battle of a person losing touch with their identity, leading to the journey of exploring who they are and accepting the truth.

IB Year 13 Performance

A Hip Hop dance trio interpreted by Sierrinya for her IB Dance performance exam. This piece conveys the idea of being on fire and ready to tackle anything that comes in one's way. It is a suggestion of being prepared to face anything anytime which is portrayed through the use of Hip Hop movements to deliver that energy.

Morpheus

(The god of sleep)

GCSE Year 11 Quartet

A GCSE Dance Performance Exam piece performed by Albane, Nanako, Sumire, & Rosa. This piece explores one night of NREM and REM through a journey of sleep using one dancer as the sleeper, two dancers as the dream and one dancer as the nightmare. Dream and Nightmare brings the sleeper through a prediction of what happens in a dream versus what happens in a nightmare.

Genius

Varsity Dance Team

“ Genius” explores the idea of proving to others your self-worth. There are moments in life when you doubt yourself, but you realise that you're smart enough and strong enough to face any challenges. The choreography includes an improvisation part which makes it exclusive for the audience.

Cycles

IB Year 13 Composition (Sierrinya)

“Cycle” delves into the concept regarding the cycle of life which explores the constant ups and downs to convey the cycle of emotions within our life. This choreography is inspired by current life events of chaos and experiencing all emotions at once, be it good or bad. The choreography employs a range of levels to make it more relatable for the audience in regards to the idea of life constantly moving in spirals and the idea of not waiting for anyone as life leads you to where you least expect it.

A Hip Hop Dance piece performed by Niva. This piece won 1st place in the IDO Thailand competition for the Hip Hop Junior Category.

A ballet solo by Kiana performing the Odalisque Variation from Le Corsaire.

Let it Go

Jazz Contemporary Company

“Let it go” is a contemporary dance that identifies the feeling of “ letting an issue go” performed by the Jazz/Contemporary Company. The choreography represents the feeling of anxiety, pain or worry, and this emotion will change through the dance when the performers release their struggle and find their inner peace. This choreography also includes an improvisation part which makes it exclusive for the audience.

Gossip Folks

Hip Hop Company

Gossip Folks is performed by our Hip Hop Company team and recently won 1st Place in the Upper Secondary Division of TISAC Dance Competition 2023. This piece is inspired by Missy Elliot’s song “ Gossip Folks.” It is centred around the idea of spreading gossip among cliques in High School. The spread of gossip is explored through subtle whispers, sneaky glances, play with facial expressions, the constant swapping of which clique is at the centre of gossip, and the fast-paced choreography that will take you through an exhilarating journey.
