This week we look at how diversity is represented in the work of our High School students. And celebrate the work of our Artist of the Week.
With monthly theme at St Andrews International School Bangkok being “We respect diversity and celebrate both our similarities and our differences”, we reflect on how this is one of the most important philosophies of the Art Department.
Within the Art Department we like to promote the idea that there is no wrong answer in our subject. We are lucky that Art, in all its different creative strands, such as photography, sculpture or textiles, represents a wonderful opportunity for divergent thinking amongst our students. This week we have been dipping into our store of images and have selected a number of artworks that best represent the theme of diversity, and the celebration of similarities and differences. We have included work where cultural diversity has been symbolically represented, but also where artwork demonstrates the diverse way our young artists have responded to a theme or brief. (Artwork by Gam, Gung Ging, Ton-naam, Gunn, Paola, 8B, Mena, Angelo, Anish, Yana, Derek).
This week’s Artist of the Week has been awarded to Beauty in Year 12Sb. In this charcoal piece, Beauty explores the contrast between the abstract black geometric shapes and the buoyant cloth. The sense of depth and movement was created through the gradual increase in size of the black shapes and the interwoven cloth. The skillful use of tone and texture adds to the mood of this intriguing piece.
With the goal of providing meaningful help to the flood victims in the northern regions of Thailand, our entire community at St Andrews Bangkok came together to raise funds and donations for the affected families. In the span of a few short weeks, added to donations of food and clothing, we managed to raise an astounding total of 386,676.50 THB in donation funds. To all students, teachers, parents, and staff who participated in our efforts and contributed to this cause—thank you!
