High School teams will depart for FOBISIA in Phuket this week...Catch up on the performances and highlights of our Flames and Marlins sports teams...Stay abreast of upcoming sporting events and competitions in the weeks to come.
Our team departs this Wednesday for Phuket to participate in the U13 Games.
This is the first team to compete with the very best of British International Schools in Asia, having spent the last few years at a level below. We’re excited for this new challenge which is testament to the commitment and hard work that all of our Flames and Marlins show.
Our U12s had a good game against Ballers Academy at the weekend, running out comfortable winners. This was good experience for our Y7s who will be stepping up next year to fill the places of the current Y8s.
We will look to continue to offer weekend Academy opportunities throughout the off-season to engage our ballers in some competitive action.
We had our first U13 and U15 rugby games against opposition from the French School, LFIB. The boys acquitted themselves well, scoring some good tries despite losing both games. This is a promising start for our teams as they begin their Rugby journey.
We have our second parents v students match on Tuesday 20 March at 4.00 p.m. Please feel free to come along and support. As well as being great experience for our girls, it is also good fun for players and spectators alike! And the girls are looking for revenge after their loss in Game 1…
This past weekend our Under 13 Flames Tennis Team was in action against four other area international schools in a tennis tournament hosted by our official tennis provider Spin & Slice Tennis Academy. Our boys and girls demonstrated some truly exciting match play in this tune-up before FOBISIA in a couple of weeks.
We will continue to offer activities for those who wish to participate in organised sport during the holidays, starting with our Multi Sport Camp at Songkran (9-12 April). We’ll also offer another bball camp, although it is likely to run in the afternoon at Songkran.
Details will be sent home this week. As usual, we’ll also use Facebook and Instagram to keep you updated.
We hope you may have had a chance to look at our news Sports portal, where we are already posting fixtures, team sheets, photos etc for our busy sports schedule. You may access it using this link.
The site is open for players and parents alike to check rosters, schedules etc. It is a great tool for communication between coaches, players and parents, though unlike the current system, the emphasis will be on parents and players to be proactive in checking the site, rather than awaiting emails from coaches!
We will still need to communicate via email for transport requirements for the time being.
We recommend that you visit the site and familiarise yourself with it. If you have any feedback, please let either Mr Damon or Mr Ollie know.
By August, we hope everyone will be ready to use SOCS to follow the action!

Our FOBISIA children had some great success at Shrewsbury on 5 March. Preparations are going well and the team is looking strong for the Games in June. Our U9 Football teams have also been in action this week.
Before the end of Term 2 all the children from Years 3-6 will do their second running endurance test around the school and they have their Aquathon (during their swim lesson) that starts from 12 March. The running endurance test is not a race and is not about running fast. It allows children to work at their own pace and run for as long as they can without stopping. Once they stop then the test stops and the distance they have run is their score. We will give the children the scores from Term 1 so they know what they are trying to beat. Once again during this time we will be talking to children about living a healthy lifestyle, the types of the exercise they can do away from school and the importance of exercise.
The second round of the TISAC Festivals were completed for the U9 children this week. The girls fell just short after winning their first 2 games but lost their final game is a close game to the eventual winners. In one of the games the girls were losing 2-0 but with a great second half performance they came back to win 3-2.
The boys had their second festival last Thursday and came out champions and undefeated across both TISAC festivals.
Also on Saturday our U9 teams went to Patana for the Patana U9 tournament. We took 3 boys teams and our girls team which, other than the hosts, was the most participants from any school in Bangkok. After coming second in the TISAC League, the U9 girls came back stronger than ever and produced a brilliant display winning the tournament and not losing a game. Our 3 boys teams had mixed results with our U9 Boys A team falling short but playing some fantastic football. Our Boys B and C teams played against some tough opposition and both finished 3rd in their groups.
Other upcoming events include:
U11 Boys TISAC football festival - TISAC @ ASCOT - 15 March
U11 Girls TISAC football festival - TISAC @ Soccer Pro - 27 March @ Soccer pro
U9 Boys TISAC Football Tournament - Thursday 29 March @ 107
U9 Girls TISAC Football Tournament - Thursday 29 March @ Polo Ground
U11 Boys TISAC Football Tournament - Saturday 31 March @ Regents
U11 Girls TISAC Football Tournament - Saturday 31 March @ Bromsgrove
Harrow Festival - 12 May - U9/U11 teams
The Moose Games is STA’s first ever gymnastics competition and will be held from 31 March to 1 April. The squad has been working hard on their routines and now look to perform against the best schools in Bangkok. The new Flames Gymnastics kit is nearly here and it will be great to see our gymnasts perform at this level. This year is our first year with a gymnastics squad so it is fantastic that we can already compete. This is just the start of our gymnastics journey and we now look forward to adding more events to our school calendar. The competition falls on the same weekend as the Marlin Mayhem so these children will have to choose which competition they want to take part in.
Our Level 2 girls will compete on Saturday 31 March in the last session from 4.30 p.m. If the schedule runs on time, they will finish around 7.30 p.m.
Our Level 3 girls will compete on Sunday 1 April from 9.00 a.m. and are scheduled to finish around 11.30 a.m.
It’s a difficult time of the year as, for most schools, basketball is out of season. But on Thursday we welcomed Traill U11 Girls to STA for a friendly fixture. Our girls were triumphant and enjoyed some competition
After the success of their first fixture last term, the Year 4 boys and girls squad have been invited to go to Patana to play against their Year 4 teams on Thursday 22 March. The selected children will leave school at 1.15 p.m. and head to Patana for a 2.30 p.m. tip off.
There are 2 swim meets scheduled for March. These will have the strongest swimmers in Bangkok and it’s a great chance to compare and compete against the best.
BISAC Swim Meet - 17/18 March @ NIST
Marlin Mayhem - 31 March - 1 April
Four years ago we took our FOBISIA teams to Shrewsbury to which we were convincingly beaten in every game. This year we won 3 out of 4 games and the tables were turned with our children showing greater understanding and skill levels. Well done to all the children for their hard work and progress. We have future games to come before the FOBISIA Games with these friendly games giving our children some valuable experience before the Games.
Teeball @ TCIS - U11 Girls selected team - Monday 26 March
Teeball @ TCIS - U11 Boys selected team - Wednesday 4 April
Teeball @ ASB - All FOBISIA team - Wednesday 28 March
Teeball @ NIST - TBC
The dates for the Aquathon are a little complicated due to the children’s busy schedules, but the majority of the aquathons will take place in the week 12 to 16 March. Exceptions to this are the Y3 and Y4 Tuesday swimming groups who will have their aquathons on 20 March and the Y5 Monday swimming group will have theirs on 2 April.
The children will be asked to run and then swim the distance they feel they are capable of. These events are a great way to help the children work on their determination and resilience. By completing these type of events and not giving up children will get a real sense of achievement and a belief that they can achieve anything with hard work. There are two Aquathons:
Normal Aquathon
Year 3/4 - 3 laps (850 m) running and 2 loops in the pool
Year 5/6 - 4 laps (1 km) running and 2 loops in the pool
Aquathon X
Year 3/4 - 5 (1.25km) laps running and 3 loops in the pool
Year 5/6 - 7 (1.75km) laps running and 4 loops in the pool
Now is a time to start thinking about the kit your child will need for the FOBISIA Games. If you go to our uniform shop all these items will be available. Also, children that do not have the Flames Teeball logo on their PE top can bring it to K.Seung to get the logo.
Wednesday - All FOBISIA SQUAD (Years 6,5,4) will have athletics training. This will give all children a chance to work on their athletic events.
Friday - All FOBISIA SQUAD (Years 6,5,4) will have Teeball training at the Arsenal training facility Pridi Soi 21. We normally only do this a couple of times before FOBISIA, but by using the bigger teeball pitches at Arsenal for longer, we will be better prepared.
If you have any questions please email Mr Damon.

Mr. Ollie will be presenting it to the High School students on Wednesday 7th March in the Sports Hall at 12.45pm so that they may get to know it. He’ll recommend to them that they show it to you too, in case you’re interested.

Our Saturday Programme continues to grow with so many great sporting options for our children. It is great that STA students can come to the Primary School and keep active over the weekend and have fun with their friends playing sport. On Saturday mornings we have Gymnastics, girls Football, Yoga, Club Basketball and our Flames Basketball Academy. Currently, we are looking at opportunities to extend the football so that all of our children have the chance to play football at the weekend. We are also trying to encourage more children to join up for endurance events that take place specifically for children at the weekends. If you would like to know more about our Saturday program please email Mr Damon (damon.se@standrews.ac.th) or to enquire about the endurance events, please email Khun Seung (seung.sa@standrews.ac.th).
