Unlock Your Future with the IBCP at St Andrews Bangkok

Education is more than just a pathway to a degree. At St Andrews International School Bangkok, we believe that education is the bridge to the future. Our mission is to provide a wealth of opportunities and guide our students as they grow into resilient global citizens.

The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) is designed for those students who crave a hands-on, immersive learning experience—one that prepares them for the world of business and creative industries.

The academic programme for aspiring professionals

The IBCP empowers students who want to gain practical, real-world experience now, while also laying the academic groundwork for future success. Whether you're looking to kickstart your career in business or explore your creative side, the IBCP provides a robust educational framework that encourages personal growth, critical thinking, and professional skills development.

All students will choose a BTEC Level 3 International Diploma as their career-related study. In addition to this, they will select two or three additional IB subjects to complement this vocational focus. The IBCP Core of Personal and Professional Skills (PPS), the Reflective Project (RP), Service Learning (SL) and Language Development (LD) round out the students’ development as a career or higher education ready graduate.

IB Career-related Programme: Focus and Vocation

The CP was specifically developed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement.

St Andrews currently offers the IBCP in Business, Travel and Tourism, Creative Media or Art and Design, Sport, E-sports and Applied Science.

In addition to the in school classes, we also encourage students to take the opportunity for work experience, and we have built the timetable to ensure the ability for IBCP students to be released one day per week to gain direct career-related experiences with one of our many business partners. This invaluable opportunity will ensure that the students gain the interpersonal and professional skills needed for future success.

The IB Career-related Programme Core

The CP core components give context to the DP courses and the career-related study, drawing all aspects of the framework together. Through the CP core, students develop personal qualities and professional skills, as well as intellectual habits required for lifelong learning.

Component 1: Personal and Professional Skills (PPS)

Personal and professional skills is designed for students to develop attitudes, skills and strategies to be applied to personal and professional situations and contexts now and in the future.

In this course the emphasis is on skills development for the workplace, as these are transferable and can be applied in a range of situations.

This component is taught through 1-2 hour/week timetabled lesson and students will evidence their progress through a portfolio of work and regular reflections on the following topics:

1. Personal development

2. Intercultural understanding

3. Effective communication

4. Thinking processes

5. Applied ethics

Component 2: The Reflective Project (RP)

The reflective project is an in-depth body of work produced over an extended period of time and submitted towards the end of the CP. Through a reflective project students identify, analyse, critically discuss and evaluate an ethical issue arising from their career-related studies.

The reflective project is intended to promote high-level research, writing and extended communication skills, intellectual discovery and creativity.

Component 3: Service Learning (SL)

Students are expected to be involved in Service Learning activities for 18 months of the programme, regularly reflecting on their learning during this time.

Some of this will take place as part of the vocational learning on the BTEC Diploma, or as activities embedded into PPS class, where students will be expected to engage with local community groups and organise events or activities to support their identified needs.

Students may also identify their own service learning projects, or work through our well established connections with Second Chance Bangkok, Bangkok Community Help, Operation Smile or Central Thailand Mission.

Component 4: Language Development (LD)

Language development ensures that all students have access to a language programme that will assist and further their understanding of the wider world. The ability to communicate in more than one language is essential to the IB’s concept of an international education.

Language development encourages students to improve their proficiency in a language other than their best language. Students will evidence their progress through a portfolio of work and regular reflections, demonstrating 50 hours of language learning.

Why choose the IB Career-related programme?

The CP is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a unique programme addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. Through choosing a career area, such as Business or Creative Media, students will complete a focused BTEC qualification which is ideal for a student who knows what area of work they want to pursue in the future by providing real-world experience and know-how, adding a different dimension to a student’s skill-set and capabilities. BTEC are assessed through coursework based assignments spread out over the two years. There are no exams.

In addition to this, students will complete two or three IB subjects at SL or HL which complement the career focus. In recent studies by the IB, students believed the CP had helped to develop key skills for education, work and life, with 87% agreeing that the CP had developed their academic skills, 82% reporting that the CP had developed their work-based skills and 70% agreeing that the CP had developed their personal skills.

This combination of academic challenge integrated with flexible vocational learning, with opportunities for engaging directly with employers through work experience or visits in the local area, as well as studying a bespoke course designed to develop skills employers are seeking, enhances the IBCP qualification to support students in lifelong success.
