From the 14th of May 2018 to the 18th of May 2018, all the students at the Primary School at Regents took part in STEAM week. We used science, technology, engineering, art and maths to investigate and then build our own sustainable city.
First thing on Monday morning, we had an assembly about sustainable cities and watched 2 videos and a slide show. After assembly, we thought about what a city needs. There was around 40 things, including a cinema and a theatre! We used London and Bangkok as examples and I learned what congestion meant. I was particularly interested in transport because I wanted to learn about eco-friendly transport.
Then came the difficult part, we needed to do lots of research. I researched with Anna, Siwon, Amilia and April on the iPad. While my group was busy looking at transport, others were researching about; power, housing, water, recycling and food. We watched a video about a town, in the mountains, in japan called Kamikatsu, which recycled everything they had!
On Tuesday morning my group carried on researching about transport. We watched a video of how to make a mini solar panel car. There were things we had like; lollipop sticks, bottle caps, straws, and sticks and we didn’t have like miniature solar panels and things I don’t know. The most interesting thing was that solar panel cars was easy to make and hard at the same time!
Then came the design stage. I was pretty proud of myself and many people (including me) liked my drawing. In my city there was; a solar panel cruise, an eco-friendly, solar panel hotel, wind turbines, a wind powered train and a metro station, a solar panel football pitch, a river, a dam and a solar panel recycling dump. Everything was also wind powered, and if there was no sun and wind, it will be water powered. I called my city Wakanda, like in the movie ‘The Black Panther'.
On Tuesday afternoon, we started constructing our sustainable city. We each made a condo block model. We each took some red and white cardboard. We had:
One piece 9 cm in length, 5 cm in width x2
A piece 9 cm in length, 3 cm in width x2
A piece 5 cm in length, 3 cm in width x1.
We also made rain water collectors. On the roof of my condo I drew a solar panel to generate power.
In our city we have wind turbines. We have wind turbines to use natural power, rather than gas, electricity, oil and batteries, which gets wasted and costs lots of money.
In our sustainable city we have an enormous farm to grow our own food- not food that gets transported thousands and thousands of miles away and uses a lot of electricity, in; cars, trains, trucks, aeroplanes, etc.
We also have markets to buy our own food in our own city - not colossal, shopping malls which wastes power far away from our homes.
Finally we have trees to replace the ones we built over and to have clean air and loads of oxygen and to make our city look green and healthy.
