Why boarding at a British school in Thailand?

The benefits of boarding are fairly well known: time and space to focus on your academic studies; an opportunity to develop the vital life-skills of independence and self-sufficiency; learning to live as part of a community  before heading off to university; and endless chances to make friendships which will last a lifetime.

Of course, you can do all those things at the well-established and prestigious boarding schools of the UK, Western Europe and North America. True, but take a moment to think about the advantages of a boarding school like this one, a British boarding school based in the beautiful South East Asian country of Thailand.

Advantage 1: Cost

Attend a good boarding school in the UK and you will pay a minimum USD 50,000 per annum on boarding fees and tuition costs – and it’s easy to pay much, much more than that. Come to Regents International School Pattaya and pay half that amount – that’s right, a comparable education at Regents costs parents in the region of USD 27,000 per annum, because the cost of living is so much lower in Thailand.

Advantage 2: Return on investment

It’s about more than cost though: if you’re going to invest in your son or daughter’s future (and is there anything more important to invest in?), you want to get value-for-money. Join a well-known boarding school in the UK which offers the IB Diploma Programme, like Box Hill School or Felsted or King Edward’s School Witley, pay your USD 50,000+ per annum, and know that you’re a member of a school whose senior students get on average a very respectable 32 or 33 points out of maximum 45 in the IB Diploma Programme. The thing is, the students at Regents averaged 33 points in 2016, too. In fact, 10% of this year’s graduates scored 40 points or more – recognized globally as the mark of an outstanding individual performance. And they then moved on to universities like the London School of Economics and the University of California Berkley – in other words, some of the finest universities in the world. All that, and their parents paid less than USD 27,000 per annum. That’s an impressive return on investment.

Advantage 3: Lifestyle

It’s not better at Regents, just different. I promise not to dwell for too long on climate: there’s nothing wrong with Britain’s grey skies, drizzle and cold winds, I just happen to prefer blue skies and a tropical climate. More important is the fact that a boarding school in Thailand, like this one, will appeal to those students who have guts and a sense of adventure. By all means head to the UK if you’re a student looking for field hockey and the unavoidable trips to Big Ben. But if you’re more interested in plunging into tropical rainforest, learning to surf in Bali or wakeboarding in a tropical climate, then you’ll certainly want to give Regents a look.
