Please introduce yourself.

Hello, my name is Yewon Heo. I have two daughters. One is in year 4 and the other is almost two years old.

How long have you been a parent at Northbridge International School Cambodia?

It has been three years.

How is your child supported at Northbridge?

Firstly, she likes the school very much. She is the youngest in year 4, so her social skills and emotional development may be a little slower than others, but the teachers take good care of those areas and give feedback on how to support her at home.

Since my daughter comes from a mixed-race family, I feel that the teachers care greatly for her in establishing her own identity.

Do you think it’s important for a child to be surrounded by nature?

Of course. Especially in Phnom Penh, where there is not a lot of green space, the green space (on campus) is very precious. When children see it, they feel the desire to run and play. I also appreciate that it is a safe and clean area.

Do you feel Northbridge International School Cambodia offers a safe and secure environment?

Yes, the school's system makes you feel safe when you leave your child in the morning. Nobody can enter without a school pass, and if a child doesn’t feel comfortable, saying goodbye would be difficult. The teachers and teaching assistants are well-trained in educating children safely, which makes me feel relieved.

Did you enjoy the Family Picnic and International Day?

I think the school provides a lot of events that encourage families to participate. The one that I liked the most was International Day. I thought it was a very important event for my daughter to establish her identity as she comes from a mixed-race family and has grown up in a third country.

Wearing a hanbok, she put a Korean flag here and a Canadian flag there [in the hanbok]. She sang in Korean, visited the Canadian booth, and said, ‘This is Daddy’s country!’ It was a very important event for her to establish her identity.

Why is it important for children to learn other languages?

The most important thing I care about is developing her mother tongue. I think she may lack proficiency in Korean because she grew up in a foreign country. Originally, there were Korean and Chinese mother tongue classes starting in G1, and I was so happy to hear that it was expanding to KG. 

Learning the Korean language is very important to me, and I think it plays a significant role in establishing one’s identity, so I am grateful to the school.

What changes have you seen in your child since they joined Northbridge?

She has gained a lot of confidence and improved greatly in her social skills. One thing I noticed is that she has become interested in various cultures.

‘Mommy, that teacher is from Brazil. What language do they speak in Brazil?’

And,‘My homeroom teacher is from Ukraine. What kind of food do they eat there?’ Like this, her interest and curiosity about other countries grow naturally.

What are your dreams for your daughter’s future?

Just like the school’s mission, 'Caring hearts and ambitious minds,' I hope she becomes a person with a caring heart, able to empathise and live with people from different cultures and backgrounds. 

Regarding 'ambitious minds,' I think my husband will appreciate this a lot. Our goal is for her to first find out what she likes and what she's good at, and then to obtain all the critical thinking and problem-solving skills she needs at school. 

Finally, we wish for her to grow up to be a global citizen who can contribute positively to society.

안녕하세요, 제 이름은 허예원이고요.

저는 두 딸이 있는데 하나는 Y4에 재학중이고, 하나는 이제 돌이 되가는 아기입니다.

당신은 부모가 된 지 얼마나 되었나요?

3년 된 것 같아요.

귀하의 자녀는 어떻게 지원됩니까?

일단 아이가 학교를 너무 좋아하고.

EL4 반에서 제일 어리거든요, 아이가. 그래서 사회성이나 정서발달이 다른 친구들보다 조금 느릴 수 있어요.

그런데 그런 부분들을 선생님들이 너무 잘 케어해 주시고 가정에서 어떻게 서포트 해야하는지 피드백도 계속 주시고.

그리고 아이가 혼혈아이라서 정체성도 확립해갈 수 있도록 굉장히 신경을 많이 써주시고 있다는 생각이 들었어요.

아이가 자연에 둘러싸여 있는 것이 중요하다고 생각하시나요?

그럼요. 특히나 이런 green space가 부족한 프놈펜에서는 이런 green space가 되게 귀중하죠.

일단 보면 아이가 뛰고 싶게 하는 욕구가 있게 하죠.

그리고 안전하고 깨끗하고 놀수 있는 공간이니까 좋은것 같아요.

학교가 안전하고 안심할 수 있는 환경을 제공한다고 생각하시나요?

네, 일단 아침에 “잘 갔다와” 하고 놓고 가도 안심이 되는 그런 시스템이잖아요.

Pass가 없으면 들어갈 수 없고.

그리고 아이도 편하지 않으면 “엄마 잘가” 하고 쉽게 떨어질것 같지 않은데요.

선생님들도 교육을 잘 받았고. TA까지도 어떻게 아이들을 안전하게 교육시킬 수 있는지 교육도 잘 받으신것 같고.

그래서 마음이 놓이죠.

가족소풍과 세계의 날을 잘 보내셨나요?

학교에서 굉장히 가족을 많이 참여시키기 위한 이벤트들을 엄청나게 많이 제공을 하고 있다는 생각이 들어요.

그 중에 하나가 제가 제일 좋았던게 International Day인데특히 제 딸이기 때문에, 그리고 제3국에서 자라는 혼혈아이기 때문에 정체성을 확립해가는데 굉장히 중요한 이벤트라고 생각했거든요.

한복입고, 여기 하나는 한국국기 , 하나는 캐나다 국기 하면서한국어로 노래도 하면서 Canada booth 가서 여기가 아빠 country라고도 하고되게 아이한테  정체성을 확립하는데 굉장히 중요한 이벤트였고네, 그랬던것 같아요.

아이들이 다른 언어를 배우는 것이 왜 중요한가요?

그리고 가장 좋은거는... (Korean으로 지금 말할까요?)

제가 가장 신경쓰는게 아이의 모국어 발달인데 외국에서 자라왔기 때문에 한국어가 많이 부족할 수 있다고 생각하는데학교에서 모국어 프로그램을 KG까지, 원래 G1부터 Korean이랑 Chinese mother tongue이 있었는데 KG로 확장을 한다는 소리를 듣고 제가 너무 기뻤거든요.

왜냐하면저한테는 한국어 교육이 굉장히 중요하고 아이의 정체성 확립에도 너무 중요한 역할을 한다고 생각해서 그걸 학교에 고마워하는 점입니다.

귀하의 자녀가 우리 학교에 입학한 후 어떤 변화를 보았습니까?

자신감이 많이 늘었고 그리고 사회성도 정말 많이 늘었고 그리고 하나 제가 notice한게, 다양한 문화에 대해서 관심을 갖게 됐다는거 “엄마, 저 선생님을 브라질에서 오셨대. 브라질은 어떤 언어 써?”이렇게 자연스럽게 다른 나라에 대한 관심이나 호기심이 커지더라구요.

그리고, “담임선생님도 우크라이나에서 오셨는데 거기는 무슨 음식 먹어?”이렇게 해서 diversity, 다양한 배경과 국적과 문화를 가진 사람들, 선생님들과 학생들이 공존하는 그런 환경에 있다는게 굉장히 만족스럽거든요.

그래서 그런 점을 많이 발견하게 됐어요.

딸의 미래에 대한 당신의 꿈은 무엇입니까?

학교미션, “Caring hearts and ambitious minds”처럼 일단 caring hearts한 사람이 됐으면 좋겠고공감하는 능력이랑 다른 문화, 다른 배경을 가진 사람들과 같이 더불어 살 수 있는 능력을 첫번째로 갖췄으면 좋겠고Ambitious mind는 우리 아빠가 많이 좋아할것 같은데 ...

자신이 일단 좋아하는걸 찾고 잘하는걸 찾은 다음에학교에서 가장 필요한 비판적 사고 능력이라던가 문제해결능력, 그런걸 다 갖춘 다음에사회에 긍정적으로 공헌할 수 있는 그런 세계시민으로 컸으면 하는게 저희 부부의 바램입니다.
