The children in Foundation 2 have loved the story of ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson and we have used it as a great springboard for all kinds of great learning. The children were excited to make their own stick families and were motivated to use their phonics learning to try to write out their family members names. There was lots of great questioning, imagining and discussion to answer questions such as “Where did the Stick family come from? and children demonstrated great story sequencing and oral language skills by making their own pictures to retell the story. Some children were even inspired to create, write and draw a new story about Stick Man and his family. The children used their imagination to create new scenarios such as when Stick Man tries to escape from a fire and they considered all the different ways and movements used to escape. They children also practised practical maths by collecting and measuring the length and width of sticks collected in the playground. What a great story to provoke great learning!
