Message from the Principal
I (and indeed Mrs Embley) are very excited about the Gala Dinner bing held this weekend. It is always a lovely way to celebrate the end of the year. We are organising an Iftar for all our staff as they have been part of making the school what it is.
Celebrations are a great way to be part of the team. Mr Cullinan talks about TEAM NAS with both his students, and also to their parents. Sometimes the word "team" is rather overused. In the school context however it is one of the most important phrases of all.
In the battle for good results, good manners, self confidence and self worth, it can often be a case of "I fought, we won". By this I mean that we all struggle to do well, we all from time to time suffer from self doubt or feel uncertain or lost. If we did not we wouldn't be human.
It can sometimes be a lonely fight, especially for adolescents, who often feel at odds with the world.
But...this fight is best won together (we won) as part of a team.
I fought, we won.
I am proud to fight on behalf of TEAM NAS.
I'm also...looking forward to a night out with my beautiful wife :)
Michael Embley

Message from the  Head of Primary

It was lovely to be a part of ‘Stay and Play’ this week, where we welcomed many of the children starting in our Nursery classes in September.  In fact, many of our ‘new’ children are siblings, and it was great to see so many of our NAS families preparing their children to follow in big brother or sister’s footsteps.  As you may already be aware, the EYFS unit here at NAS Dubai is attracting a lot of positive attention both locally and even internationally.  Right from our first day we set out to become the leading exponent of English Early Years best practice in Dubai.  Although there are always things we can do to improve further, there are some truly amazing things going on in our EYFS.  Oxford University Press became aware of the outstanding practice taking place here and selected us to be a model school for some of their latest teaching and training materials.  With this in mind, OUP sent a film crew into EYFS yesterday, to document some of the work that we do.  The film crew spent the whole day in school and our EYFS children were very excited by the presence of the camera men!  OUP were rather pleased with the way the filming went and will now be spending a few weeks editing the many hours of film down to fifteen minutes.  They are hoping to have this complete by the end of June, so  we can share the product of the filming with you at some point in the future; it will be a great record and celebration of our first year.

Have a great weekend; I hope to see many of you at the Gala Dinner tomorrow.

Message from the  Head of Secondary

It is good to be back at NAS Dubai after a week in the UK. The event organised by Nord Anglia Education was a inspiring and led by many leading voices in education. Learning is central to success at all levels.  I am truly delighted at the level of work Nord Anglia Education puts into the development of staff in our schools. I will be talking to our students in assembly on Monday about my own learning and how it impacts them.
This week has been exam week and I have been impressed by our students' dedication. As promised there will be no homework next week, hopefully this will allow you to have some time together as a family.
On Wednesday we welcome into school our new Year 7 students and our current Year 6 students for Transition Day.  Transition from primary to secondary is a scary time for all as they move into a new setting. The day is laid out to offer both parents and students reassurance about secondary.  A great opportunity to meet fellow students, teachers and dispel any nervous before day 1.

Have a great weekend.

Liam Cullinan

UAE Interschool Ski Race Championships 30th May 2015
Saturday 30th May 2015, saw the first ever ski race that NAS Dubai have officially entered and with over 130 children (aged from 6 to 16) from schools all over the country, competition for medals from some of the more established Dubai schools was always going to be fierce.
So what an amazing result it was when at the end of competition, NAS Dubai had secured 7 winner’s podium finishes.

The NAS Dubai Ski Development Pathway is due to start in September 2015 and early indications suggest that there is going to be massive participatory interest in the Pathway.  As such, it is anticipated that skiing ability levels will shoot through the upward projectile for those children engaged with their skiing development.
This year’s UAE Interschool Ski Race Championships has provided us with the perfect tonic from which to launch the Pathway, and I am certain that next year’s Championships will provide NAS with even more medal winners.

Many, many congratulations to all the children that took part in the racing, there were endless smiley faces and satisfied racers.
We now move onto next weekend, Saturday 6 June, when NAS Dubai have selected a ski race squad of 32 skiers to take on Repton, Kings and JESS in a high level quadruple team fixture at Ski Dubai.
Medal winners from the 2015 UAE Interschool Ski Race Championships:

  • Rio Sharman - U8 Girls GOLD
  • Finn Sherriff - U8 Boys GOLD
  • Ben Sherriff - U10 Boys GOLD
  • Niamh Sherriff - U12 Girls SILVER
  • Clementine Silverwood - U14 Girls SILVER
  • Zara Shaw - U14 Girls BRONZE
  • Archie Morriss - U14 Boys BRONZE
Onwards and upwards!!!!
