INSIGHTS “Third Culture Kids”

INSIGHTS “Third Culture Kids” - INSIGHTS Third Culture Kids

The Nord Angla INSIGHTS content continues this month with a very insightful article related to Third Culture Kids (TCKs).In this context, TCKs are seen as children who are raised in a culture which isn’t that of their parents or the culture of their nationality, while also living in a different environment during a significant part of their childhood development years.  That’s certainly the case for a significant proportion of international school children, including a vast proportion of our NAIS Pudong alumni and many of our current students.

The article succinctly highlights the challenges that these students encounter, and rightly alerts to the need for families and schools to ensure a feeling of community for their students. At NAIS Pudong we are actively working on what will be our new Communities programme, deliberately aiming to ensure that not only do our students feel a sense of belonging within their community, but that their also identify with the core values of the school that is to be creative, confident and considerate students who are prepared for their futures.Student leaders are working with the academic staff now to refine the Communities structure and aims and we'll aim to share the outcomes of this work with you over the current academic year.

Of course, by their very nature, being confident and considerate are elements highlights in the article as important for students to break through some of the barriers they may encounter in a new community, so our values are doubly effective in this respect. As part of our Dreams Start Here release over recent and coming weeks, we also highlight the way in which alumni from our school have specifically identified that sense of community and support they received at our school as having a significant impact on their ability to engage in the wider world after school, while also giving them a feeling of 'home'while studying here.

Please do take the time to read the new article and reach out to the school if you have any thoughts of suggestions for ways in which we can continue to support our students in this respect.
