Dear Parents,
What a delight it is to welcome you all, both new and returning, to the start of another academic year. For those of you who are new to our school community, we are overjoyed to have you join us.
This past Friday, it was a pleasure to see so many of our families come together - from our Year 1 students, embarking on the first morning in their new classrooms, to our Nursery and Reception classes, where some of you joined us for an optional Stay and Play session. This week in school, is all about settling and giving the children the time and space to feel comfortable and safe in their new class.
What a delight it was to witness the children beginning to familiarise themselves with their new teachers, school and classmates and for those returning students, to see them excitedly reconnecting with their friends.
Sense of Place: In the early days of the school year, establishing a strong sense of place for our children is of the utmost importance. Over the induction period, we gently guide the children, introducing them to the people, spaces, rhythms and routines that will shape their days. For it is only when they feel firmly grounded in their school environment that they can truly thrive.
Sense of Belonging: A sense of belonging is equally vital. We must ensure that each and every child feels safe, secure, and connected - not only to the caring adults who will nurture them, but to their newfound peers as well. It is these special bonds that provide the foundation upon which our students can flourish.
Sense of Ownership: Lastly but no less important, is promoting in our children a profound sense of ownership of their school - their daily experiences, interactions and their learning. It is this deep sense of agency and self-direction that will truly ignite their curiosity, passion and engagement in their journey of discovery and learning as well as supporting their overall well-being.
In the coming weeks, as your child settles, they may encounter a few "bumps" along the way. This is all part of the journey - a natural process of adaptation and growth and how we cope with changes and meeting new people. During these times, it is really important that your child feels listened to and cared for by all the adults who are ready to support them. They may return home feeling quite tired, for they are absorbing an entire universe of new sights, sounds, and relationships. But please rest assured, we are here to support them every step of the way.
If any concerns should arise, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or to me directly. We are here to fully support you and your child, so they feel ready and excited to embrace all that school has to offer them and the countless possibilities and experiences that lay ahead for them this coming year.
Warmest Regards,
Ruth Hanson
