Join our upcoming Open Days to learn about the outstanding education at ISM
Lower Campus students enthusiastically got their teeth into this year’s Science Week topic, Plastic Fantastic! Throughout the week, children learned about issues surrounding the planet’s plastic use. They then came together as one to explore, plan and create ways to find a solution to the problem on a school, national and global scale.
Science Week 2021 was an enjoyable hands-on experience for students and teachers alike. The children’s passion for science grew as their knowledge and awareness of the world around them expanded.
Combining skills from Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths, students completed a wide variety of different plastic-themed activities. Year Four students started their week by facing the complex task of removing plastic from part of the Moscow River. Afterwards, they used this plastic to build numerous reduce, reuse and recycle awareness sculptures. In Year Three, students enjoyed a Rubbish Fashion show – creating plastic-only costumes and displaying them on the catwalk. In Year Two, students designed and built a fantastic variety of plastic-collecting machines to help out with the Lower Campus recycling programme. Meanwhile Year One students learned how to grow cress in using pots created from recycled materials. They then learned about plant growth, watering them with their recycled watering cans! In Early Years, children experimented with plastic and other materials to make recycling suits.
Throughout the week, we also held a Lower Primary Plastic Fantastic poster competition, where children got creative with ideas for reducing or clearing up plastic waste on a school, national and global scale. Students' posters were judged on three main criteria: creativity, content, and verbal and visual presentation. There were many terrific entries showcasing a wonderful level of knowledge and creativity, with David from Year Three and Mila from Year One eventually taking out the junior and senior prizes. Rounding off an exciting week of science, children diligently sorted the remaining plastic into different types, which were then taken to a local recycling centre.
