Photography Competition 2019 Over the past few weeks, ISM students have been honing their photography skills for this year’s competition. The competition was inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and entrants were challenged to ‘Reveal Science, Engineering or Maths through the Art and skills of Technology.’ Irina Gofmann_hero image

This year our annual Photography Competition was inspired by our collaboration with MIT university whose challenge, Reveal: Discovering Science Through Compelling Images, aims to use images to enhance the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

ISM students, from Reception to Year 13, parents and teachers recently took part in our annual Photography Competition and demonstrated their fine eye for a photo.

This year we had some fantastic parent, student and staff entries that showcase the beauty of Science in action. The judges faced a challenging decision but ultimately chose their winners based on the explanation and skill required for the shot.

MIT scientists use imagery to explore unknown worlds, from the depths of the oceans to the surface of a thin strip of photographic film. Scientific images can transcend disciplines, represent complex situations, communicate across languages, and ignite curiosity. Students took on their own interpretations of the challenge submitting works of an incredibly high standard.

Some chose to look at the natural world for inspiration and thought about how photography can ‘reveal’ more than we usually see. Others focused on plants and how they can appear different when looking at them in finer detail or from a fresh perspective. The photographs were taken all over the world, including some from our very own Krylatskoe and Rosinka campuses.

At Krylatskoe Upper Campus, the  judging panel included: Mrs Briony Brooks, Ms Alexandra Bolshakova, Mrs Stephanie Holt, Mr Stephen Coburn and our guest judge Mr Ross I'Anson, an accredited Formula One and motorsport photographer. He was, “floored by the high technical and creative standards of the entries” and commented on how well “some of the entries responded to the brief, which is a hugely important part of being a professional photographer”.
