Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!

Welcome to Spring term at Compass Themaid. The students arrived back at school happy, refreshed and ready to start the new term. This term will be busy with learning and events as we take advantage of the cooler weather.

Our series of Secondary Roadshows is underway with Mr Porter leading the team around our sister campuses to showcase learning at Themaid. Transfers and admissions for the academic year are already open so if you want to enroll siblings or know of anyone who wants to transfer, please ask them to contact our Admissions Officer, Olivia Villaneuva.

We will be holding a Secondary Open Evening for new or transferring students on Wednesday 22nd January from 6.00-8.00pm. There will be a short presentation about Themaid campus and our curriculum offer plus a chance to see learning in action, meet teachers and students.

Simon Porter, Head of Secondary at Themaid Campus and Director of Quality and Staff Development, is presenting a workshop for Community Connect Doha on ‘Cultivating a Growth Mindset at Deema Community Center on Saturday, 18 January from 12.30 pm to 2.00 pm.

The workshop aims to explain the concept of growth mindset and how the mindset can limit or positively stimulate a child's development. The workshop will also discuss the importance of a growth mindset to students, the role teachers and parents can play in developing this outlook and ways in which children can be encouraged to fulfil their potential.

This workshop is open to both parents and educators. Certificates of Attendance will be provided. The workshop can be booked via this link. The Deema Community Center location can be found here.

Last week was an exciting week for EY1 students at Themaid Campus. They started the ‘Bears’ IPC unit and as an Entry Point had a ‘Teddy Bear's Picnic’. The children brought their favourite teddy bear to school, had a picnic outside, sang songs about bears and they had the opportunity to introduce their teddy bear to their classmates. They had a lot of fun making a house for the three bears and painting a teddy bear template. They listened to ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ story and had time to retell and act out the story. EY1 are excited to cover this topic over the next 5 weeks and are looking forward to participating in different activities.

The term got off to a good start with a primary assembly about New Year celebrations around the world and sharing New Year traditions from different countries. The children learned about making new year resolutions and how they can set goals to improve in the coming year. The IPC Personal Goal was Thoughtfulness and we had some fantastic examples of how thoughtful our students can be towards others.

Some of our students in year 6 have been practising their handwriting and developing a neat, cursive style of writing. They were awarded with pen licences at assembly. Congratulations to Leah Marigliano, Seung-Eon Lee (Jay) and Ainoa Aristeguieta Bugarin on their achievement.

Early Years 2 Themaid had a very exciting Entry Point for their Treasure unit. They came back from lunch to find a message in a bottle on the carpet, from a pirate called Captain Jack. Captain Jack wrote about his crew and what it was like to be a pirate. He asked the children to think of some questions to ask him because he would visit them later in the week. The children thought of things they could ask the pirate and used their skills from phonics lessons to write them down. On Thursday, Captain Jack visited the children and answered their questions. He also gave them a treasure map of Themaid campus that the class followed to find his treasure chest. This week, the children will be creating their own treasure maps for Miss Cullinan to find their treasure.

We are looking forward to seeing this very exciting term unfold.

Kind regards,

Ann Djedid
