Year 9 students have been challenged to develop and create ideas for large scale sculptures during Art lessons this term. The project ‘Marine Life’ aims to raise awareness of issues that face our oceans. Around the world, more than 8m tonnes of plastic leaks into the oceans each year, and a recent study found that billions of people globally are drinking water contaminated by plastic. Globally a million plastic bottles are used every minute and with plastic production set to double in the next 20 years and quadruple by 2050. Plastic pollution is a key concern facing life on planet earth.
Year 9 have produced some excellent drawings and watercolour paintings of marine animals to capture the beauty and natural wonder that our oceans offer. Students are now working on their marine life sculptures, which will be made from recycled plastics. These will appear around school in the coming weeks. Students have also developed posters to educate people on the need for change and offer simple choices that we can all make to limit the quantity of plastic pollution.

· Buy a flask or water bottle that you can reuse
· Recycle your plastic waste
