Smart moves: Champittet students prove their prowess in global NAE chess tournament

Chess Tournament - Chess Tournament

We were thrilled to watch our primary and secondary students put their best moves forward in the recent Nord Anglia Education World Chess Battle. This global online tournament brought together more than 500 NAE students worldwide – including 25 of our own students from Collège Champittet – to play over 2,000 games of chess!

Chess offers intellectual challenge and great fun to children of all ages. As one of our secondary students said, “I began playing chess two years ago, and this is my first tournament. My goal is to pass my first match!” From beginners to seasoned pros, our Champittet chess players cheer each other on and have a great time across the board.

Western Hemisphere Qualifiers and Global Chess Finals

Our students competed as teams and individuals in two age categories: Under 18 and Under 11. For the first time, this year’s tournament introduced the category for students aged 7 to 11, giving our primary students an excellent opportunity to step up their chess game.

In the first phase of the NAE World Chess Battle, students competed in qualifying rounds held in the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere. The best players from each hemisphere will continue to the Global Finals in March.

Our Champittet chess players performed brilliantly under the pressure of the Western Hemisphere qualifiers. We are proud to report that our primary school team placed 8th out of 18 teams, while one of our rising under-11 chess stars ranked 13th out of 177 individual players – a terrific accomplishment! Our secondary school chess team also achieved excellent results, qualifying for the Global Team Finals on March 11th.  Well done to all our Champittet chess champions, and best of luck to our students in the upcoming finals!
