For Phuc Thien, a Year 10 student at BVIS, the journey to MIT from October 30th to November 3rd, 2024, with 60 international peers from Nord Anglia schools worldwide, was a memorable week packed with unforgettable experiences.

First Steps of Inspiration

Phuc Thien shared, “Exploring MIT’s campus, one of the world’s top universities, was one of the most fascinating experiences I’ve ever had.”

Upon arrival at MIT, Phuc Thien and his friends were welcomed by Mr. Shon Mackie, a distinguished researcher at the institute, who introduced the group to a special challenge: designing support tools for an upcoming MIT expedition to Alaska. This challenge not only required creativity and teamwork but also inspired Phuc Thien to explore his own potential in science and innovation.

Discovering Science and the Role of Scientists in Antarctic Conservation

On the second day, Phuc Thien had the opportunity to attend a talk by Ms. Loika, a researcher at MIT and a marine conservation expert specializing in Antarctica. Through her heartfelt stories about endangered wildlife like penguins, Phuc Thien gained a deeper understanding of the critical role scientists play in protecting the environment.

The session not only expanded his knowledge but also conveyed a powerful message about conservation, sparking a sense of environmental responsibility among the students.

Seeking Solutions Through Practical Research

One of the highlights of the fourth day was a presentation by Dr. Stewart Isaacs on solar panel research and how fine dust impacts their efficiency. After the presentation, Phuc Thien and his peers split into groups to brainstorm solutions for reducing global temperatures by 2100, a challenge that stimulated both creative thinking and critical analysis.

Beyond this, the students also attended a workshop exploring the connection between engineering and origami. By transforming 2D designs into 3D structures, Phuc Thien learned how precise folding techniques could create complex structures, enhancing his spatial awareness and architectural thinking.

Assembling Cameras for Field Research

The fourth day was full of challenges and excitement. Phuc Thien and his group worked together to assemble a specialized camera, which MIT will use for an upcoming research trip to Alaska. Assembling the camera required precision and patience, from design to construction. Phuc Thien and his friends had to give their best effort to complete the camera, making it a hands-on experience that underscored the value of meticulous work and teamwork.

Lessons from an Unforgettable Journey

This trip was both an unforgettable learning opportunity whilst also creating lasting values of friendship and gratitude. “The most important thing I learned is to cherish time and friendships. I met so many new friends who share my passions and I learned a lot from them. Saying goodbye was really the saddest moment,” Thien shared emotionally.

Returning from MIT, Phuc Thien feels more confident and determined to pursue his dreams.

This journey not only expanded his knowledge and broadened his horizons but also ignited new ideas and aspirations, helping Phuc Thien lay the foundation for his future ambitions.
