Livestream: What Gen Z need to thrive in the future

Generation (Gen) Z - born 1997-2012 – will soon become the next workforce generation in the future. Gen Z are famous for being creative, bold and tech savvy.

With the increasingly competitive labour market, the emerging advanced technology (such as the recent #ChatGPT) and an uncertain future that lies ahead, especially after COVID-19 pandemic, our livestream program took place successfully on Wednesday 22nd February 2023 which offered an interesting opportunity to share and discuss the skills and attributes that Gen Z require, to thrive in the future and how they can well prepare for that.

THE FUTURE OF WORK

Joining the Livestream, Ms. Tieu Yen Trinh, Founder and CEO from Talentnet Company shared some deep insight about the future trends and career potentials for Gen Z.

In terms of the differences of Gen Z at work, Ms Yen Trinh excitedly shared, "A great thing about Gen Z is when it comes to work, they always want to have fun and enjoy. Gen Z also love to make a difference, make a breakthrough, and they are interested in a sustainable, connection-oriented organisation to create great value and enhance good cooperation. With good skills and understanding about technology, Gen Z has favourable conditions to access the surrounding world.”

Answering the question of Ha Vy, Host and Year 12 student at BVIS about the preparation of Gen Z when AI technology is expected to replace many jobs in the near future, Mrs Trinh affirmed “The group of repetitive jobs will likely be replaced; however, the group of jobs that require networking skills, building human relationships such as consulting and sales will still pose a demand, which opens up the potential for Gen Z to promote and develop the necessary skills.

THE REAL WORKING WORLD THROUGH THE LENS OF GEN Z

As a Class of 2016 Alumnus at BVIS, Gia Quy was very excited to return to school after six years. He talked about dynamic experiences in the field of Art right from his Secondary years to discover and strengthen his passion. Thanks to his constant efforts and favorable conditions in the International A Level Programme that allowed Quy to pursue and focus on developing his interests, he had a great foundation to achieve certain successes that include 2 MVs for Ngọt Band and Impermanent Film Project premiering at different International Film Festivals.

In agreement with Mrs Tieu Yen Trinh, the co-guest of the Livestream, Gia Quy affirmed that “Gen Z are passionate about doing things that make themselves happy. In the current situation when there were so many options around, the confusion is a normal thing that Gen Z encounters. Instead of panicking, we need to calm down to determine and visualize what will happen in 5-10 years to make our best decision.”

Sharing a common thought with Gia Quy, the host Ha Vy also talked about the importance of Wellbeing for Gen Z at work. Ha Vy is also an active member of the Secondary Student Council's Wellbeing Committee who bring many initiatives and activities to promote awareness and action related to this aspect across our school’s community.

WHAT GEN Z NEED TO THRIVE IN THE FUTURE

In a rapidly changing world, BVIS understands the essential skills, knowledge and attitudes that Gen Z students need to acquire. In turn, this provides unique learning opportunities and experiences that help our students confidently develop into resilient and creative global citizens who are ready to make a positive difference to the communities around them.

As Gia Quy also shared,“ Our BVIS teachers always supported and encouraged me to pursue my passion. The opportunities for me to become a House Captain and member of the Student Council also helped me to develop confidence and leadership ability, which is especially useful in my current life and work.”

As a BVIS parent, Ms. Tieu Yen Trinh emphasized the importance of the family in accompanying, understanding and connecting with their children.

“The generation gap definitely exists and parents should put their children at the centre to understand their children's thoughts more. I really like BVIS because it is a good learning environment where a close connection is constantly being improved between the school, parents and students. My two children, Stella and Kevin, have developed as the family expected. Recently, the experience of joining an International Student Leadership Conference has helped Kevin not only become more confident, empowered to express opinions, but has also broadened his worldview and understanding as a global citizen", Ms. Yen Trinh concluded.
