This year, new to the curriculum at BVIS is Computer Science a subject that aims to develop students’ logical thinking. They will be able to apply this to solving problems, both computer based and in the world around them. Building an understanding of how computers work and how to express algorithmic solutions to problems is fundamental to becoming part of the next generation of computer scientists, working on anything from artificial intelligence to quantum computing. Computers are only going to become more closely involved in everything we do: teaching our children how to program them effectively changes them from being simply the users of technology in the future to the creators of future technology.
When we asked the students their opinion about Computer Science: ‘I think it is important and it [coding] is associated with many of the best jobs at the moment’ - Zac, Y10. ‘Comp sci is really fun and in my opinion it is really important in my life too’ - Steve, Y10.
The course of study at BVIS intends to inspire younger students by giving them a taste of the different areas of computer science, whether that be by simulating networks in Year 7 or cracking passwords to learn about security in Year 8, and then culminates in IGCSE and International A Level examinations to prepare students for further studies either in Computer Science, Maths, engineering or any number of related disciplines at university and beyond. There is certainly a wide selection of careers available to students with the right skills in computer science, and it is excellent that we can inspire and provide a foundation for these students here at BVIS.
