A Love for Books that Turned Into a Business

A Love for Books that Turned Into a Business - a-love-for-books-that-turned-into-a-business
A Love for Books that Turned Into a Business Jessy Lu, owner of Tales on Moon Lane children's bookstore, joined the book week celebrations at BSN on Thursday 3rd March and gave our Business Studies students an ‘up close and personal’ presentation into the ups (and downs) of running a business.

If you love books and want to become an entrepreneur, opening a bookshop maybe the ideal venture! As least according to Jessy Lu, owner of Tales on Moon Lane children's bookstore, who joined the book week celebrations at BSN on Thursday 3rd March to give our Business Studies students an ‘up close and personal’ presentation into the ups (and downs) of running a business.

Jessy explained that her mission was to spread a love of reading and storytelling but that taking risks has always been a part of her “feeling alive”. She admitted her choice of business was itself a risky choice, but she allayed her fears by undertaking plenty of research before diving into the project.

Jessy’s presentation placed an emphasis on the importance of market research over business theory, but she built upon students’ understanding of location factors by reminding them to not just focus on the market size, but also the culture of the area. She explored how demand in Nanjing is shaped by the culture and values of the city.

Jessy was genuine in discussing her experience of been an entrepreneur and shared that her toughest challenge thus far was becoming a bookstore owner in a global pandemic. She learnt more about resilience and flexibility that she expected and has managed to not just survive, but thrive, in this challenging economic landscape, by focusing on how she can best serve her readers, regardless of what outside forces throw at her.

What was clear to all who listened was Jessy’s message that being an entrepreneur is more about passion and dedication than capital.

Jessy Lu is one of five authors, journalists, illustrators and publishers visiting the school during Book Week, offering workshops, presentations and talks to students throughout the school.
