“Chess is the gymnasium of the mind.” – Blaise Pascal
Chess is a game with a long and noble history dating back to seventh century India, where an early form of the game called chaturanga was played. Since that time the game has swept the world and continue to be an excellent test of strategy, skill and intelligence.
Chess is a fun form of mental training for children as well as a way to develop interests in a number of other seemingly unconnected disciplines. Chess has had a big influence on game theory in mathematics; literature (Alice in Wonderland) and the study of psychology.
This seemingly simple pastime is a fantastic way for BSN’s pupils to engage in experiential learning due to the complexity of the game strategy and rules. It allows our pupils to develop cross-curricular skills such as visualization, calculation, analysis and evaluation, which can then be applied to many other areas of study and life in general.
