MFL Carnival Celebrations

February is a very special and festive month in France and Spanish-speaking countries, with many festivals and carnival celebrations taking over the streets. To help students understand the culture of France, Spain and Latin American countries better as well as to widen their cultural horizons, the MFL department organized love-and CARNAVAL-themed lessons, during which students watched videos of the various carnivals taking place this month, listened to love songs, learnt about the reasons behind the celebrations and worked on projects. Year 10 students were tasked with designing a marketing poster advertising one of Spain’s love-themed holidays and wrote Valentine’s Day cards whereas Year 9 Spanish students researched facts about different carnivals in pairs. Both Year 9 and 10 language classes prepared traditional snacks, which were then judged by Ms Millar. Students did a fantastic job and we were all proud of them and grateful for the effort they had put in-those desserts are not as easy to make as they look!

Finally, the real highlight of each lesson was the salsa dance tutorial! Thank you very much to Ms Samuels, who led the tutorial with Year 10 classes-great fun!Learning the vocabulary and grammar of a foreign language is just a part of our language lessons. Introducing students to foreign cultures brings those languages to life and puts everything they are learning in context. It was wonderful to celebrate the Carnival season with some of our students and I hope everyone involved enjoyed this memorable experience.
