As an educator, it is never easy to deliver the news to students that they have not been successful in a competition or talent show. Last week, I had to do just that to over 100 students as part of our school's talent show. What struck me the most was the courage and vulnerability these students had shown by putting themselves out there in the first place.
It is important to acknowledge and validate the range of emotions that students go through when receiving this type of news. Whether it's disappointment, frustration, or even anger, these feelings are valid and should not be dismissed. As educators, it is our responsibility to support and guide our students through these emotions and help them understand that success is not always immediate, but it is a continuous journey of growth and improvement.
In addition to acknowledging their emotions, it is crucial to have a conversation with students about potential options or next steps to further enhance their talents. This could include seeking feedback from judges, practising and refining their skills, or even exploring other avenues to showcase their talents.
To all the students who participated in our talent show this week, I want to applaud you for your courage and commend you for putting your best foot forward. Remember, success is not measured by winning or losing, but rather by the effort and determination you put into pursuing your passions. Keep pushing forward and never give up on your dreams.
