Over the past week, BISS students in Tanzania have been engaging in meaningful activities, exploring the culture and contributing to the local community.
Group A students spent the first day visiting the Kahawa coffee centre, where they learned about the coffee plant ecosystem, the business model, and the history of coffee in Tanzania. They also sampled different types of roasted coffee and gained insight into the unique flavours. Later, they had a camping experience, collaborating with students from our sister school, BIS Houston, to pitch their own tents and prepare their own meals. This experience fostered strong bonds between the two groups of students.
On the second day, Group A students worked tirelessly to build a goat shed and install solar lights for a local family in need. Their teamwork and dedication were evident as they cooperated seamlessly to complete these tasks. At the end of the trip, students reflected on their experiences in the context of our global goals. They engaged in meaningful discussions with BIS Houston students, sharing insights and building connections. In just two days, Group A students accomplished all their tasks and formed strong relationships with their peers. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and commitment.
Group B students took on the significant task of helping to build a primary school. Over the two days, they moved tons of rocks to lay a strong foundation for the classrooms, mixed cement to complete the foundation of the toilet building, and constructed walls to form the school’s structure. Additionally, they made desks to ensure the students would have a place to sit and learn.
While working on this project, Group B students gained valuable insights into the Tanzanian school system and the many challenges faced by local students. Despite working tirelessly under the hot sun, they thoroughly enjoyed their time together. After two days of labour, they had the opportunity to unwind and relax in the pool, a well-deserved reward for their efforts.
The adventure continued…
Group A embarked on an unforgettable two-day safari in Tarangire National Park, immersing themselves in the wonders of the wild. They camped under the stars, enjoyed the warmth of a campfire, and marvelled at the abundance of wildlife. Among the many animals they encountered were lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes — a truly mesmerising experience.
Meanwhile, Group B began their camping adventure with a morning dedicated to learning about the cultivation and roasting of coffee beans. In the afternoon, they arrived at Dolly Camp, a serene site teeming with wildlife, where zebras and elands roamed freely around the grounds.
After a restful night’s sleep, the group enjoyed breakfast before taking on the responsibility of cleaning the premises. The remainder of the morning and afternoon was spent on meaningful community work. They built goat sheds and stoves, as well as installed lights for local families — a contribution that has a profound positive impact on their daily lives.
As tradition dictates, the day concluded with a refreshing dip in the pool, marking the end of an enriching and fulfilling experience.
