Students are provided performance opportunities regardless of their age and musical ability. They have access to a vast array of tradition orchestral instruments as well as guitars, ukuleles, African drums, and Orff instruments housed on-site. Most of our Juilliard-trained music teachers pursue high-level music endeavours outside the classroom, and all truly enjoy sharing their passion for and appreciation of music with children.
There are many high-quality music ensembles for your child to participate in. In addition, we encourage students to form their own bands. Lunchtimes in the department are a hive of musical activity, as students rehearse solos and ensembles in preparation for concerts.
Current music opportunities are available across all ages and year groups including:
- Choirs
- Brass Bands
- Jazz Band
- Orchestra
- Wood Wind Ensemble
- Instrumental lessons: Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Piano, and Percussion
Orchestra, bands, and choirs engage in a wide spectrum of musical genres and performance experiences. Our dedicated teachers are all professional musicians, who are passionately committed to inspiring and developing young performers.
Numerous instrumental lessons take place each week with visiting specialist music teachers. Many students take lessons with more than one instrument. There are also opportunities for students to enter for external music examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
Student performers are featured in many organised school activities. Talent is often showcased in theatre productions, recitals, and concerts in school. In addition, music is a regular feature in assemblies and celebration events at BIS Houston.
Outside of school, our choirs have performed for Houston’s Major League Soccer team, Houston Dynamo, and at many other local events, such as the British-American Business Council Christmas Dinner and the Houston International Festival.
