Our dedicated athletes in basketball, cross country, football, swimming, table tennis and volleyball have started their 2023-24 competitive season with some excellent performances against teams across Ho Chi Minh City. With training in full swing since the beginning of term, and many competitive fixtures under their belts, our students are certainly committed and showing true teamwork skills and sportsmanship.
Our season 1 sport teams, after the sport squad try outs at the very beginning of the academic year, immediately began their preparation in the first full week back in school. Since then our our students have demonstrated true commitment putting in countless hours of training sessions, both early morning and late afternoons, highlighting their dedication to their BIS sport teams.
From our first Secondary Saigon International Schools Athletic Conference (SISAC) fixtures in basketball, volleyball and table tennis, Primary football matches and cross country, to a 100 strong BIS Barracudas Squad taking part in the SSIS relay invitational, our sport teams are demonstrating true perseverance and teamwork.
Here you can read a round up of some of our match reports from our outstanding PE teachers who coach and inspire our teams providing them with the skills, teamwork and attitude to succeed both on and off the pitch.
SISAC Fixtures
Some of the first fixtures of the season were a series of outstanding performances from our U13 and U15 Basketball, U19 Volleyball and U19 Table Tennis Teams in the SISAC League.
“The atmosphere during the first round of fixtures was a credit to our students and coaches, and demonstrated the best of BIS Sport. Thank you to everyone who has come to show their support during our Home games, and we look forward to following the successes of our sports teams as they continue on their sporting journeys through Season 1 this term”
Iain Colley, Director of Sport
U13 Girls Basketball
Mid-September saw the opening game for our U13 girls Basketball Squad, an away against The American School (TAS). Our first win for the girls with a score of 22-4, with a great defense in the 2nd half not allowing any nets in. Player of the match (POM) goes to Lila- for her drive towards the basket and getting those lay ups in.

U13 Boys Basketball
In October our U13 boys’ basketball team played ISHCMC. Excitement in the air as they had back-to-back wins for both A and B. A sure sign of their dedication to training. A team (37-18) and B team (37-11). Player of the match against their Bs went to Quoc Hung and player of the match against their As went to Ba Khang.
Primary Football: Boys & Girls B&C Teams
The Primary BIS teams were in action week beginning 18th September versus ISSP and EIS on the “theatre of dreams” a.k.a. the big field. With a maximum capacity crowd, the BIS “booters” started their campaign off with 2 wins vs ISSP for the boys and a win and a draw for the girls.
More importantly was the effort shown by all players. In the heat, the players kept running for the whole match! Some excellent skills were shown that we have been practicing in training, and great teamwork from all involved.
Player of the match awards went to:
Raul
So
Abby

BIS Barracudas at the SSIS Invitational Relay Swim Meet
On the 7th October, the BIS Barracudas were back in action for the first time this academic year, and what a way to start the year. 100 members of the swim team travelled to SSIS for their invitational relay swim meet. This is the biggest team the Barracudas has ever taken to an external swim meet and it was great to see so many new faces in the community.
There were 25 events in total, with three age groups in each event: 9 and under, 14 and under and 15 and over. BIS had a whopping 8 teams in the 14 and under girls age group and 9 teams in the 14 and under boys.
The purpose of this meet was to bring the swimming community back together and have fun working as a team. For some of our younger swimmers, it was the first time they had competed at a swim meet, so learning the rules and how a meet runs was really beneficial to them.
Our girls and boys A team in the 14 and under age group won every one of their events. Our 9 and under Boys A team won all 6 of their events too. All members of the Barracudas, in every team, pulled together and demonstrated excellent teamwork and determination.
Our captains for the year were also announced. Well done to: Kimberly, Nicole, Ben and Ingrid for being selected to be Barracudas captains this year.
Overall a really positive first meet back of the year. Thoroughly enjoyable and great results all round. Well done Barracudas!
Ms Sophie Roberts, Head of Aquatics
U9 and U11 Cross Country
The U9 and U11 Cross Country team travelled to SSIS on Tuesday 10th October to participate in a friendly race, giving the children the opportunity to experience what race day feels like! The students were a credit to the school, showing determination when racing and incredible support for their teammates throughout. It was an extremely enjoyable event with some fantastic results as well, with the U11s winning their races overall.
Well done to all involved!

U9 and U11 Football
Yet more primary football and this time against ISHCMC.
The U9 fixtures with ISHCMC on Tuesday 10th October were so far the most enjoyable friendly football afternoon for our youngest footballers. The ISHCMC Rhinos brought 60 players against our 17 so our students divided into 3 teams either have 1 substitute or none. This means a lot of running for us! They really had fun and were very satisfied with the number of games they played. We did not track the scores as it was a friendly but our students ‘claimed’ that they won all their matches. And to mention as The visiting team also said had a great fun playing lots of matches against our team, a testament to their sportsmanship.
Mr Lamech Sancho, PE Teacher
The U11 girls also had a great time away at ISHCMC Junior campus and it was our first away match of the season. All our other games have been at home so it was nice to play on a different pitch. The A girls fought very hard against an improving ISHCMC side coming away with a 2-0 loss. The player of the match here was Rana at the back. She made some great tackles and intercepted the ball well. All the girls showed great skill. In the B fixture the superstar player was amandine up front, she turned with the ball fantastically and netted two goals. The B team are rapidly improving and have been tipped as the favourites coming into the City Championships! Another 2-1 win for the B team.
Mr Mark Jones, Head of PE
Congratulations to all of our athletes on these countless achievements and to the effort you all give to your training. It certainly pays off. Also thank you to our inspirational PE teachers and coaches who help drive our students to success.
We are thankful to have countless opportunities to compete in the city, across Vietnam and internationally, through collaborations with SISAC (Saigon International Schools Athletic Conference) and FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia), in addition to this year's Nord Anglia Education Games.
We are excited for more sporting action after the holidays so stay tuned.
