Eddie the Penguin Saves the World! As part of IPC, Year 2 explore the ways humans can both protect and harm the environment, form and share opinions about the world we live in, and communicate their geographical understanding in a variety of ways. The production of Eddie the Penguin was certainly a unique way of sharing what had been learnt!

It was with great excitement that Year 2 gathered to perform to our younger friends, teachers and parents. Colourful costumes, super singing and amazing acting made this show a real highlight of the school year.

Eddie the penguin discovered that the world he lives in is changing and that the ice is melting. He decided to take his family to find a new home at the North Pole, where he met Peggy the polar bear and discovered that human beings are causing the ice to melt! Eddie set off on a mission to save the planet and let the world know how they can change things for the better.

First, he visited the United Kingdom where he helped teach parents and children that there are many alternatives to travelling to school by car; skipping, cycling, scooting is much more fun and reduces pollution! During this part of the show, the children were delighted to encourage the adults in the audience to stand up and join in the action as they performed ‘The Walking Song’. Mr Ian used this opportunity to remind everyone that using alternative forms of transport to get to and from school would help alleviate traffic congestion and get us all on the move more quickly.

Eddie and his gang then headed to South Korea where they explained why we should turn off lights and air conditioners when we weren’t in the rooms. In Brazil they taught the woodcutters to plant trees instead of chop them down.

The final destination was Vietnam where the penguins taught the children of BIS how easy it was to recycle many different materials. Year 2 have taken this message seriously and, encouraged by the team of Eco Warriors, started collecting used pens and glue sticks which will be turned in to new products.

The grand finale reminded everyone “We have one world to care for, so we must make sure, we think about our world today!”, a message that we feel our production has reinforced to our community.

It is always special when we can share learning with parents, but this occasion felt even more so as it is the first time this year that we have been able to invite our wider community to join us in school. The children felt so proud as they took their final bow and were surrounded by teachers and parents who felt the same! Well done Year 2!
