Last week saw three triumphant performances of the Key Stage 3 production of The Caucasian Chalk Circle (by Bertolt Brecht).
Through the play, we were asked a question of nature vs. nurture that hit home with the audience. Seeing Key Stage 3 students so aptly and deftly master such mature material was a true honour to all of those fortunate enough to witness this challenging and engaging piece of theatre. The production was hugely enjoyable, with all the typical Brechtian tropes to be found. Overall, the ensemble was fantastic – on the same wavelength throughout - demonstrating excellent characterisation across the stage, through multi-roling the cast managed to carve out the distinct caricatures of Brecht’s epic play impressively. The piece deployed elements of the Verfremdungseffekt, whilst easing up to allow for touching moments of tenderness and humanity. Congratulations to all the students involved who rose to the challenge and performed with confidence and style.
