It's been an exciting start to the new academic year for Year 6. Not only did they return to school to find themselves in brand new classrooms, but they also found out they'd be studying their History focused International Primary Curriculum (IPC) unit, ‘The Great, The Bold and The Brave’.
To introduce this topic, all children participated in a variety of activities from different ancient civilisations to get a taste of what is to come.
During the unit of study, children will be taught a variety of research skills to enable them to locate information quickly, find specific information from trusted websites, check information using different sources and write information in their own words to demonstrate understanding. The children will then investigate a variety of different civilisations and share their knowledge within classes and then the year group.
During our entry point, the children learnt all about the Phoenicians and their alphabet, creating 21st century graffiti using this to write their name. Ancient Greece was introduced and how their pottery can help us understand life during this period of time. Have you ever played hangman using Egyptian Hieroglyphs? We did and it was not easy. Roman mosaics were investigated and the children began to create their own. Mehen, an ancient Egyptian game, fascinated the children and they all thoroughly enjoyed learning how to play this. In addition, we found out about ancient Greek, Roman, Mayan and Egyptian medicine – and they had some very strange ideas.
