Year 6 CREST Science Award 2018

The Science team and students at BIS HCMC Secondary Campus are looking forward to welcoming the new Year 7 students in August 2018.  Our teachers  are constantly striving to ensure the Year 6 students from the Junior Campus have a smooth transition into Year 7. To this end, they have created a unique transition programme within Science.

The current Year 6 students have been introduced to the CREST Science award, which involves pupils choosing a project, planning and collaborating with their peers at the Junior Campus using Google Classroom. Some pupils are working in groups, groups they will continue to work in over at the Junior Campus, as well as during trips in order to form new friendships.

Many of the BIS learning skills such as: independence, perseverance, communication, critical thinking and collaboration are employed throughout the project process. The use of the internet to choose reputable websites for research, an introduction to collaborative learning via Google Docs, and working as an effective team to solve problems - are just a few of the skills introduced.

The Year 6 students will now need to become self-reliant and deliberate in their approach to carrying out the necessary research for their chosen project. They carried out their given projects and were successful at the very least. The projects are designed to be open-ended, with pupils encouraged to take risks, try out new ideas and not be afraid of their experiments. Many of the research skills associated with this can be completed outside of school as each group of pupils will have access to a single document to which they all participate in completing collaboratively.

As Year 7 mentors having this unique opportunity we had much fun alongside the Year 6s and welcomed the opportunity to pass on our years’ worth of knowledge and understanding. In addition to this there was also a media team who helped with filming, taking photos and interviewing the Years 6s, Year 7s and the teachers.  To watch some highlights of the project, take a look at the following video from our media team:

As a Year 7 mentor we faced a number of challenges but overall our involvement in the CREST Science Award was an extremely rewarding  process.
