Chocolate the Hedgehog Visits Year 1
Year 1 children receive a visit from Chocolate the hedgehog as part of their non-fiction Talk for Writing unit.
Learning through a real life experience, or ‘Experiential Learning’, is considered a valuable opportunity for children to apply their knowledge and understanding of concepts. This is exactly what Year 1 had planned for them this week to assist and support the children’s non-fiction writing.
As part of ‘Talk for Writing’ in English, the children will be writing their own ‘fact files’. In preparation, the children have been learning a non-fiction text all about hedgehogs. They were so excited to meet a real life hedgehog on Tuesday, when Chocolate the hedgehog came to visit.
It was fantastic to get a closer look at his features and ask questions in order to find out more. He stayed awake just long enough to meet everybody, and the children showed great care and respect by talking quietly and not frightening him. The visit prompted fantastic discussions. It was great to hear the children using the new vocabulary that they had learnt independently.
