This week our Year 9 students took part in the first stage of the FOBISIA online international Design and Technology competition, where our students have been asked to design and create a promotional gift for visitors to the school.
This competition is an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate their understanding of how many different types of visitors attend the school and their differing needs. It also encourages creativity and promotes collaboration within teams while they walk through the design process to produce a functional and innovative product using a range of materials and tools.
Gemma Handscombe described her experience of the competition so far, “We found the FOBISIA Design and Technology Competition challenging as we had to develop a product from scratch and take it to a finished prototype. The collaboration within our team was tough at times but it was a great experience to take part in as it reflected real life design situations.”
In a Dragons Den style presentation, our participating teams had to ‘sell’ their gift ideas to the BIS HCMC Marketing Department to be given the opportunity to compete against other FOBISIA challengers. We had a fantastic variety of innovative products including a sand tipper, ball bearing key chain, USB stick and many more.
After each group pitched their final ideas and answered some tough questions from the judges, they then had the difficult decision of choosing the best product that represents the school.
After hours of deliberation, Gemma Handscombe, Cathy Jeong, Sakura Kume and Ben Gilmore from 9B were the winners with their slick BIS iPhone stand. The group will now compete against several other FOBISIA competitors in next week’s final.
Well done to everyone who participated and good luck to our winning team!
