BIS Hanoi Year 11 students initiate a social project to foster holistic and sustainable education
In July, Pham Bui Gia Khanh (Year 11) with other Year 11s, Nguyen Khanh Linh, and Hoang Thai Anh launched their first activity of Chalk Road project, a student-led project dedicated to fostering holistic and sustainable education.
The idea of Chalk Road first came to Year-9 Gia Khanh while she was watching multiple videos about human trafficking across the border owing to scams and a lack of education. Feeling the need to do something and being inspired by the lessons she took at school, Gia Khanh incubated a social project to address the lack of access to quality education in mountainous areas of Vietnam. At the end of Year 10, she decided to take the lead and collaborate with Khanh Linh and Thai Anh, both in Year 11, to launch Chalk Road.
The mission of Chalk Road as elaborated by Gia Khanh is “to promote holistic and sustainable education through activities to increase self-awareness and self-confidence for mountainous regions in Vietnam”.
The planning and preparations for the project took a long time, but the action phase began less than a month before the team departed to Phu Tho, where they organised the project's first activity. From setting up a core team, developing an overall program, recruiting people and allocating responsibilities, to modifying plans at the last minute, these incredible young adults managed to complete all of the tasks right before the trip.
At Dieu Luong Secondary School in Phu Tho province, the Chalk Road team hosted an array of activities for around 300 students who are studying there.
The team held a talk show by an expert in psychology and career orientation and a total of more than 12 workshops in three days, including a "Dream" workshop, an "Exploratory Dance" workshop, a "Cybersecurity" workshop and an “Academic skills” workshop. All of the sessions were aimed to support the students at Dieu Luong Secondary school to realise their study potential, their route to success, how to avoid frauds and human trafficking and some efficient study methods.
Along with the workshops were plenty of sporting events outside, which described by Gia Khanh “was a challenge with the sun at its peak”. However, everyone in the team didn't mind as they devoted themselves to the project and the community. As part of a student-led project, we at BIS Hanoi also collaborated with our students to provide sports equipment for the event.
The event was a total success as the students enjoyed all the activities and gave positive feedback afterwards. Chalk Road was then featured on the voice of Cam Khe and certified by the People’s Commune of District in Phu Tho.
Looking back at her first successful attempt, Gia Khanh felt incredibly relieved as it was her first time founding an initiative and building it from scratch. She learned so many lessons from the experience and was proud to successfully pushing herself out of her comfort zone and taking on the leadership role. Thai Anh and Khanh Linh also shared the same pride and joy with the accomplishment of their first project activity. Thai Anh shared "After taking part in Chalk Road's first project, I felt proud of what we, the core team members, could organize and execute in around a month. I also felt a sense of pride in knowing that we successfully recruited more team members, that trust in our guidance."
Gia Khanh also expressed her gratitude to her dedicated team members, the passionate teachers at the school and all the sponsors that helped fund the project, as she noted "no project is going to be successful without the help of so many people."
At BIS Hanoi, we always encourage our students to stand up for the causes they believe in and make a difference locally and globally through practical activities. We're proud to see our students continue to embrace our values of care and helping others.
