On Tuesday, I had the privilege of taking four BIS students to UNIS to take part in a Youth for Climate Action event. Ngoc Anh and Thanh Mai from Year 10 and our UNICEF ambassadors, Thu An and Angela from Year 12, worked with students from UNIS, HIS and Concordia.
The event was introduced by Adelaide Charlier, a youth activist based in Belgium and an ex-student of UNIS. She gave an incredibly passionate and motivational address to the students and adults present, who included representatives from the UN in Hanoi as well as elementary students, teachers and mentors.
Our students then workshopped some hard and important questions that had been posed by the Under Secretary General of the UN, Fabrizio Hochschild. Mr. Hochschild was present on live video link from what he described as a very dark and cold morning in New York City. The students presented their ideas to him and each group had time for a brief Q&A. I was very proud of our students. They were put into a high-pressure situation and expressed themselves clearly and eloquently to a rather intimidating audience. The theme of the evening was of the immediate challenge that faces humanity and specifically Vietnam of climate change, but also of the inspiration that comes from witnessing young minds working together. Their passion and dedication were amazing to witness, well done to all the participants!
