This year BIS will be celebrating Book Week between 20th – 27th April 2017, along the theme of Quest Stories. We have some great events planned for the whole family to join in and celebrate their love of books:
Author’s Visit
On Thursday April 20th BIS Abu Dhabi welcomes award-winning children’s author Alan Gibbons. Alan will deliver interactive presentations to Years 3 – 9 where he will talk about his life as an author and engage the students in his own back catalog of Quest Stories. There will be a question and answer session at the end of the presentation and students will also be given the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of their favourite book! In the afternoon Alan will be working with our aspiring writers, leading a workshop which will help them discover their own narrative voice.

Daily Lessons
“There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before.” Willa Cather
During their English lessons students will be given the opportunity to discover the long history of ‘Quest Stories’. Each year group will focus on one particular tale and use it as a creative tool for students to learn all about the conventions of this traditional genre.
Book Worm Book Fair
From Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th we are delighted to be hosting this now annual highlight of our Book Week celebrations. Our hall will be transformed into a delightful book store, with titles suitable for all ages. All classes will have a scheduled visit and parents are also invited to browse and buy from 2:30pm onwards.
Drop Everything And Read
Least we forget what this week is all about, we will have a daily DEAR session where everyone, from the FS1 students to Mr. Irving and Mr. Wolfe, will have to carry a book with them at all times and start reading when they hear the whistle sound. The Book Police will be on hand to name and shame anyone caught without a book!
Open Air Cinema
On Tuesday 25th we invite all families to return to the school grounds after hours, armed with picnic blankets and snacks, and enjoy a modern classic quest tale: a young boy is plucked from his home and his father goes on the ultimate quest to bring him home. You’ve guessed it – ‘Finding Nemo’! This heart-warming family story will link perfectly with the conventions that students will be learning about in lessons during the week. Keita will be on hand, selling popcorn and drinks, to add to the ‘drive in’ movie experience.
Daily Quest Challenges
Students will become the heroes of their own stories as they solve daily riddles and clues, embarking on a quest to discover a missing Arabian jewel.
Dress Up Day
A firm favourite of our students, Dress Up Day, will be on Thursday 27th April. All members of the school community are asked to come to school dressed as a character from a Quest Story – this will finish off our literary celebration in style.
Looking forward to a busy week!
