How To Find The Right Private School: Part 2

Questions to Ask When Looking For The Right Private School - Questions to Ask When Looking For The Right School
What Questions To Ask
Selecting the right private school can be a daunting process. Asking the right questions should help you determine which school fits your child's needs. CityCast Houston recently interviewed two members of The Village School's admissions team about what the key points to consider are when doing your research.

Listen to the interview (00:26:20) to find out more, or keep reading for expert tips on choosing the right school.

1. Class Sizes and Teacher-Student Ratio

Look for schools with smaller class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio. Smaller classes provide more personalized attention and improve student engagement.

2. Safety and Security

Safety is essential. Ask about whether schools have 24/7 surveillance and on-site security officers, as well as a visible police presence. Schools should also offer comprehensive security protocols, training and refresher courses for staff to ensure a safe learning environment.

3. Extracurricular Activities

Does the school offer a wide variety of activities beyond the classroom? A strong extracurricular program with clubs, sports teams, internships and community events is vital for your child's personal development as well as making your family feel part of a larger community network.

4. Curriculum and Rigor

Investigate the type of curriculum offered. Whether STEAM-based, International Baccalaureate or arts-focused, a school should provide both academic and social-emotional learning to prepare students for the future. Look for specialized diploma options and college preparatory programs.

5. Teacher Retention and Qualifications

Teachers play a critical role in a student's education. Schools with low teacher turnover (10% or less) are more likely to foster a cohesive environment. Ask about teacher qualifications, accreditations and whether they're supported with ongoing professional development.

6. Pre-K through 12th Grade Structure

Schools that offer education from Pre-K through 12th grade provide a level of consistency, continuity and familiarity that can't be matched by other institutions. This structure helps students build stronger bonds with teachers and creates a seamless academic journey from early childhood all the way to high school.

7. Diversity

In today's global society, diversity is key. Ask about cultural, academic and curricular variety. Schools that embrace this concept prepare students for real-world challenges and foster a broader, more inclusive worldview.

By asking these questions, you can ensure the school you choose aligns with your child's academic and personal growth needs.
