Village Amongst Top 20 Best Private Schools in America according to Niche.com
Class of 2019 Senior Sharan S. was recently accepted into a highly competitive B.S./D.O. Program at Nova Southeastern University. Out of 8000 applications, 800 were called to attend and interview on-campus at the NSU's Shark Preview Weekend. There were only 80 spots available for the medical school and Sharan was one of just two participants accepted from the state of Texas. He was also awarded the Razor's Edge Research Scholarship that NSU gives to "first-time-in-college freshman who are captivated with firsthand research experiences, scientific inquiry, and problem solving" (nova.edu).
Sharan's trajectory towards medical school began much earlier than his senior year. A Village Viking since fourth grade, Sharan had always been interested in biology. His interests evolved to medicine during his middle school years and upon entering high school he knew he wanted to gain hands-on experience. As a tenth-grader, Sharan participated in the Summer Internship at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (M.I.T.I.E). He completed 215 hours working alongside surgical technicians, helping to set up, clean and take down the lab, and even suturing up cadavers on occasion. The internship gave him valuable experience and a clear perspective, remarking at the time, “What I want to be when I grow up is a physician, possibly a surgeon, and this really helps me because I get exposed to the many aspects of surgery.”
Two years later, Sharan’s dream is becoming a reality. All of his hard work and the experience he gained through The Village School Internship Program has helped shape his path and open the door to his next opportunity in life.
Every school is home to exceptional individuals dedicated to making a positive impact on their community. Whether it's through class initiatives, service projects, or independent efforts, students are constantly striving to improve the world around them.
At The Village School, these initiatives shine brightly as students embrace opportunities to lead with empathy and purpose. One such example is a project started by Milan Drummond, a 12th grader with a passion for justice and community well-being. Through her initiative, Harmony Highways, Milan is working to improve relations between the public and law enforcement, reflecting both her desire to make a difference and her career aspirations.
During the summer time, vacations, pools, and fun are certainly on children’s minds. However, it’s also important to incorporate learning into their day. Summer learning loss, also known as the "summer slide," refers to the decline in academic and social skills that can occur when children are not engaged in educational activities during the summer months. Dana Sheridan, LPC, Lower School Counselor at The Village School, sheds light on this issue and offers practical solutions for parents to keep their children's minds active during the long summer break.
