On September 7th and 8th, 36 students and 3 staff members participated in a Habitat for Humanity building project near Siem Reap, dedicating two days to constructing house foundations, painting properties, and laying concrete floors.

The grade 10, 11 and 12 students who chose to participate in this project offered their time and physical labour to this wonderful cause. Three families in a small rural community outside of Siem Reap were the beneficiaries of their efforts and working alongside the families to help them build their homes was truly humbling. The fact that this was an entirely student-led initiative, including the logistical organisation of the two-night trip itself, is testament to the character of our students at Northbridge.

But apart from the obvious support for communities in need, what other benefits can volunteering bring to young people giving of their time and why should we encourage them to get active?

  • Skill Development: Engaging in hands-on activities, such as mixing concrete and constructing metal frames, equips students with practical skills that can be beneficial in future endeavors.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Working alongside peers and staff fosters a sense of community and encourages students to collaborate effectively towards a common goal.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Volunteering in impoverished communities cultivates empathy, as students witness the challenges faced by others, promoting a lifelong commitment to helping those in need.
  • Physical Fitness: The labor-intensive nature of these building projects promotes physical health, encouraging students to engage in active, outdoor work.
  • Sense of Accomplishment: Completing tangible tasks, such as laying concrete floors and painting houses, instills a sense of pride and achievement in students, boosting their self-esteem.
  • Community Engagement: By contributing to local housing projects, students develop a sense of responsibility towards their community, understanding the impact of their efforts on others' lives, which are so vastly different from their own.
  • Leadership Skills: Taking initiative in various tasks enhances leadership capabilities, preparing students for future roles in both academic and professional settings.
  • Reflection and Personal Growth: The experience encourages students to reflect on their values and priorities, fostering personal growth and a clearer sense of purpose.

I strongly believe that all of these benefits were evidenced during our visit, and as an educator feel an immense sense of pride in all that they achieved - benefits for us teachers too!
