With the UK university application deadline now behind us, there’s a palpable sense of excitement—along with a sense of relief on my part! Thirty of our students successfully submitted their applications, each able to choose five different universities on the UCAS application. The momentum is building as we’ve already received over 90 offers, with more pouring in daily! Among these offers are prestigious invitations from top institutions, including several from the esteemed Russell Group.

Top Offers from Renowned UK Institutions

Our students have received offers so far from some of the most sought-after universities in the UK and around the globe:

  • Imperial College London – Ranked 2nd in the world (QS Rankings)
  • University College London (UCL) – Ranked 6th in the world (QS Rankings)
  • King’s College London
  • Queen Mary University
  • University of St Andrews
  • Warwick University
  • Exeter University
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Bath
  • University of Leeds
  • University of Sheffield
  • Durham University
  • University of Edinburgh

This year, we’re particularly excited to see several offers from universities further north, including Manchester, St Andrews, Leeds, Sheffield, and Durham, expanding the options available to our students.

Considering the Cost of Living

In these uncertain times, where the cost of living is rising not just in the UK but globally, it's crucial to consider the financial implications of student accommodation. While costs vary across the country, they tend to be significantly higher in central London. Here’s a comparison of estimated accommodation costs for the academic year:

Accommodation Type

London

Manchester

Standard Accommodation (Shared)

£180 - £350 per week

£90 - £150 per week

En-Suite Accommodation

£200 - £450 per week

£150 - £250 per week

Studio Apartment

£250 - £500 per week

£180 - £300 per week

The most common accommodation choice for first-year students typically involves contracts ranging from 39 to 51 weeks, with the 39-week option aligning with the academic calendar, and the 51-week option including holidays.

Expanding Horizons Beyond London

During the university application process, I've been encouraging students to look beyond London—not only because of the rising living costs but also due to a lack of awareness about the excellent opportunities' available further north.

It's common to hear students say, "I don’t care where I go as long as it’s in London," especially if they can't access top-tier universities like Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, or Imperial. Even when the universities they settle for don’t meet their academic aspirations, they often feel satisfied. I’m passionate about changing this mindset and inspiring students and their parents to consider other options.

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of hosting representatives from Exeter University, a Russell Group institution nestled in the beautiful county of Devon. Exeter is rich in history, boasts stunning architecture, and features a vibrant cultural scene—all while serving as a gateway to the breathtaking Devon countryside and coastline. I’m delighted to announce that we have received offers for students to attend this outstanding university, located just two hours west of London. The University of Reading is another fantastic option, situated less than an hour from central London in the picturesque Berkshire.

Focus on Manchester

Farther north, Manchester offers everything a student—and their parents—could desire. With direct flights from many Asian countries, a quick 20-minute train journey from the airport brings you right into the heart of the city. Known for its dynamic atmosphere, diverse culture, and rich resources, Manchester stands out as an excellent alternative for those seeking a fulfilling university experience.

Manchester University has climbed the global rankings to 34th, outperforming many prestigious institutions in London. It is the highest-ranked university outside of London, discounting Edinburgh, which ranks 27th in the QS rankings. Manchester not only excels in teaching and research but is also renowned for its exceptional student support—one of the most critical aspects to consider when sending loved ones to study abroad.

In addition to Manchester University, several other esteemed institutions are nearby, including Manchester Metropolitan University, home to a triple-accredited Business School recognized by EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA. The city is also home to the Royal College of Music and numerous teaching hospitals, creating a diverse academic landscape.

Manchester is known as the home of sport, having hosted the Commonwealth Games and housing many national performance centers. These facilities provide opportunities for student-athletes to balance their studies with their sports training, not to mention the presence of two major football teams in the city.

Manchester is a compact and easily navigable city for students. With extensive bicycle lanes and efficient tram services, getting around is a breeze—especially with a discounted student travel card. Food lovers will also find Manchester to be a culinary paradise, offering an impressive array of options from Chinatown to the famous Curry Mile.

Manchester's historical significance as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution offers students a unique opportunity to explore a city that transformed the modern world. With its stunning Victorian architecture, such as the iconic Manchester Town Hall, alongside innovative modern structures, the city embodies a rich tapestry of past and present. This dynamic environment not only enriches the academic experience but also provides students access to a wealth of cultural institutions, museums, and vibrant communities. The blend of history, diversity, and a thriving arts scene makes Manchester an inspiring place for students to learn, grow, and engage with their surroundings.

In summary, Manchester not only presents a vibrant academic environment but also a lively city life, making it a top choice for students looking to broaden their horizons beyond London.

With over ten offers already from Manchester this year, I’m confident that as word spreads about the regional universities—perhaps through our alumni here at Northbridge—we will see more and more students moving out of London to other cities in the UK. Drawn by the promise of diverse opportunities, lower living costs, and a rich cultural experience. Cities like Manchester offer a unique blend of history, innovation, and community, encouraging students to immerse themselves in new experiences and foster connections that will last a lifetime. Embracing this shift can lead to a more enriching educational journey, allowing students to thrive both academically and personally in a welcoming and dynamic environment.
