Please introduce yourself

My name is Sokuntheary, and my son’s name is Vathana, he is studying in Grade 7. I also have a daughter, Somathi, who is now in KG (kindergarten). I have been a Northbridge parent for five years now, as my youngest daughter has been enrolled since 2020.

What’s most important for you when choosing a school?

As a parent, choosing the right school for my children is very important because my family and I want our children to receive a high quality of education. Northbridge has an excellent reputation and many years of teaching experience [26 and counting] and uses the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum that I think is important for my children to learn.

How have the Northbridge teachers influenced your children’s development?

As a parent, I think that all the teachers at Northbridge, both the class teacher and the subject teacher, have made a significant contribution to the development of my children, both socially and intellectually. 

As a parent, I’m especially pleased that the school has ongoing professional development training courses for teachers. No matter what we do, all of us are always learning, and we learn from our experiences.

I know that every teacher in this school already has the right qualifications and degree, that they have the correct knowledge and experience, but we must all continue to develop, and I see these teacher exchanges happening both inside and outside Cambodia as hugely important to my children's development. 

It's a special point I saw and liked when choosing Northbridge. 

What for you makes a good teacher?

For me as a parent, I think a good teacher is a teacher who has a good pedagogy, is an experienced teacher, and understands the work they must do to teach my children according to the curriculum.

It’s also important they have a close relationship with the students' parents. For example, like my child today, she is not feeling well, so we always tell his school and communicate with the teacher directly by the Seesaw app, which is very convenient. The teacher also updates the app to keep me informed of class activities and my daughter’s achievements.

How have you seen your children develop at Northbridge?

According to my own experience with my two older children at Northbridge, my first son, in Grade 7, has become more advanced with his learning since joining the school.

He is becoming an independent kid, understands more, and his education has also developed. He now does well in his studies and recently received an outstanding student certificate from school. 

For my youngest daughter, she is growing both socially and intellectually. For instance, she knows what is good and bad, what should be done and not be done. She can read and write both Khmer and English numbers, and now she can spell and write some words as well, even though she is just a Kindergarten student.

What do you feel the school values ‘Caring Hearts, Ambitious Minds’ represent?

For the school’s motto, ‘Caring Hearts, Ambitious Minds’, this is very good and important. It represents what my family and I want.

I want both my children at Northbridge to be compassionate children, understand the hearts of the people around them, understand the feelings of others, be responsible when communicating with others, and know how to love relatives, friends, and relatives.

But at the same time, they should have ambition, know what they must do to get to their ideal grades through study, and ultimately work hard to get them to a goal that they want.
