There is abundant research that links student success with parent involvement. However, as with all things this sits on a spectrum that varies from showing an interest to actively attending school events and parent teacher conferences. At Northbridge International School Cambodia we would like parents to remain engaged in their child's education as they continue their journey through the Secondary school chapter of their life.
There are numerous ways in which this can be achieved as parents:
Supporting Homework
There is a definite strong link between student achievement and parents that regulate and assist students when they find homework difficult. Simply monitoring that homework is completed is not sufficient, ask your child what they are doing and have them explain it to you.
School Communication
In the digital age, we are all relying on devices to remain informed. Emails are sent regularly to update you on the current events at school. Check your emails often and get in touch if something is unclear. Please let us know if your email or phone number has changed so we can keep communication flowing.
Attend parent teacher conferences and ask your child how you can support them to achieve their goals. A three way conference is only successful when you are able to offer this. Recent research also indicates that attendance increases when parents are more engaged. I possibly do not need to reiterate that attendance is directly linked to success.
Academic conversations
Keep the conversations flowing with regards to what your child loves about school. Discuss the subjects that interest them the most and start conversations regarding further studies early on.
Embed academic language in your conversations. Challenge their thoughts. Academic conversations push people to think and learn in a lasting way.
We continue to look forward in supporting your child's success at Northbridge.
