Our second Parent Phonics Workshop at Northbridge International School Cambodia saw many parents of students in Early Learning to Grade 2 joining in with some exciting, hands-on activities to help to develop phonics understanding in children.
Many of our parents had attended the first workshop, so we began with a review of the sounds that children learn and a reminder of the two main skills we use in phonics: blending and segmenting. Blending is where we push sounds together in order to read words, and segmenting is pulling sounds in words apart in order to write words.
We then had a range of fun activities for parents to try out that they could easily take home and do with their children. Parents were real risk-takers and participated with enthusiasm in games and songs, such as: 'Old McDonald had a bag', 'Splat the Sight Word', 'Sound Hunt', 'Silly Soup', 'I-spy' and 'Simon Says'. They also played some rhyming games.
The main message parents took away is that supporting your child in their phonics learning at home should be fun and active, and doesn't require any special equipment.
Thanks to all the parents who attended.

The NISC swimming and sports department has been working tirelessly to ensure that every child at Northbridge becomes water safe and understands the dangers of water from an early age.
