While we emphasize formal swimming training, which can lead to a competitive swim squad, our objectives are two-fold: to increase the active members of the swim squad and to offer comprehensive water safety education.
According to an article published in the Phnom Penh Post in July 2024, drowning remains a leading cause of death among Cambodian children. It is estimated that over 2,000 Cambodian children drown each year in various bodies of water, from rivers to ponds and even public pools. Alarmingly, Cambodia currently ranks 12th in the world for the total number of drowning deaths. This is preventable through education, and we will continue to encourage children to arrive at PE sessions with their swimming attire. Given the rainfall and numerous water areas in the Kingdom, it is essential that all children in Cambodia are water safe and that parents and caregivers are aware of the associated dangers.
Embracing the incredible opportunity to become water-safe in an environment that fosters a passion for swimming and, more importantly, water confidence is essential. Learning to swim at an earlier age is crucial, as it builds lifelong skills and confidence in the water. While some parents may have concerns about swimming, believing their children are safer out of the water, the truth is that learning to swim is the safest way to prevent any potential tragedies.
Swimming is also a lifelong opportunity to stay fit and can lead to many other exciting hobbies such as surfing, snorkeling, and even diving.
