Curtain Call for Confidence: The Power of Performing Arts at NAS Dubai

Curtain Call for Confidence: The Power of Performing Arts at NAS Dubai - The Power of Performing Arts at NAS Dubai
Celebrating the Role of Performing Arts in Student Development

At NAS Dubai, we believe the performing arts are far more than just a stage production - they are a powerful platform for personal growth, expression, and development at every age. Whether in primary or secondary, our students benefit immensely from the creative opportunities that performing arts bring, both within and beyond the classroom.

From the moment a child first steps into a music room, participates in a class drama activity, or joins a school ensemble, they are taking the first steps on a journey that builds a range of essential skills. These experiences teach children how to take creative risks, how to collaborate and listen actively, and how to become resilient in the face of challenge. These are not simply desirable qualities - they are essential tools for success in the 21st century.

Why Performing Arts Matter

The benefits of performing arts in education are vast and well-researched. Through music, drama, and dance, students develop essential life skills including:

  • Confidence: Stepping into the spotlight encourages self-assurance and presence.
  • Creativity: Students explore new ideas and express themselves in original ways.
  • Communication: Whether delivering lines or harmonising in song, clear and effective expression is key.
  • Collaboration: Productions require teamwork, trust, and listening to others.
  • Critical Thinking: Students learn to analyse, interpret, and make decisions quickly.
  • Resilience: Learning lines, perfecting choreography, and managing nerves foster perseverance.

Participation in the performing arts also allows for the development of empathy. When students embody a character or engage with a new musical piece, they learn to see the world from different perspectives. They become more in tune with the emotions and experiences of others, which contributes to greater social and emotional maturity.

These aren’t just performance skills - they are life skills that prepare our students to lead, innovate, and adapt in a changing world.

A Juilliard-Inspired Experience
As part of the Nord Anglia Education global family, NAS Dubai benefits from a unique collaboration with The Juilliard School, a world leader in performing arts education. This partnership enhances our curriculum with expert-designed content, artist visits, and immersive experiences that broaden our students’ creative horizons.

Our students don’t just rehearse and perform - they learn the artistry and context behind what they’re doing. From understanding classical compositions to improvising in drama workshops, their learning is deep, dynamic, and unforgettable. Juilliard’s influence ensures that our students engage with a high-quality and thoughtfully curated performing arts curriculum that reflects global best practices.

Performing Arts in Action

Our most recent school musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, showcased just how transformative performing arts can be. Led by our talented Year 5 and Year 6 students, the production was a celebration of energy, collaboration, and passion. With weeks of rehearsals, costume fittings, set design, and choreography, it was a process that demanded commitment and rewarded every student with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

As Tara Lambert, Head of Primary, shared:

"Watching our students shine on stage reminds us of the power of performance—not just as an art form, but as a medium for growth, resilience, and joy."

Our Secondary School students also took centre stage this year in their vibrant production of The Wizard of Oz, dazzling the audience with their energy, professionalism, and creative flair. With impressive set design, imaginative costumes, and captivating choreography, the production highlighted not only the individual talents of our students but also their collective ability to bring a beloved story to life through collaboration and commitment.

Beyond the applause, productions like these leave a lasting legacy. Students come away with stronger friendships, improved time management, and a newfound belief in their abilities. These are the memories that stay with them - and the lessons that shape them.

Performing Arts as a Pathway to Wellbeing and Success

Participating in the arts also provides an important outlet for emotional expression and stress management. In today’s fast-paced world, the chance to step into another role, move to music, or sing in harmony can be incredibly grounding. These moments allow children to reconnect with their inner selves, release tension, and build emotional intelligence in a safe and supportive space.

The arts also serve as a bridge to cultural understanding. Through exposure to diverse forms of performance, students gain insight into global histories, traditions, and stories. They become more open-minded and appreciative of differences - a trait that is increasingly important in an interconnected world.

Preparing Students for the Future

At NAS Dubai, performing arts are a key part of how we develop confident, capable, and compassionate learners. Whether a student goes on to pursue a career in the arts or not, the skills and self-belief they gain on stage stay with them for life.

In fact, many of the world’s most successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers cite experiences in the performing arts as crucial to their personal development. Whether it’s delivering a compelling business pitch, negotiating in a boardroom, or leading a team, the skills gained through performance are endlessly transferable.

From their very first rehearsal to their final bow, every student who engages in the performing arts takes a step forward in their personal journey. And at NAS Dubai, we are honoured to be part of that transformation.
