Alumni Story 3: Dreams Start Here at NAIS Pudong - Alumni Story

Q1. What years were you here at NAIS Pudong, and which year group were you in when you left?

I began my journey at NAIS Pudong in Year 11 and proudly graduated from the IB Diploma program in 2019.

Q2. What memories do you have of the school while here?

Some of my most cherished memories from my school years were created at NAIS Pudong. I built lifelong friendships that continue to enrich my life today! Participating in various Project Weeks, the Tanzania week, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award trip were transformative experiences that taught me invaluable lessons beyond the classroom. NAIS provided me with a dynamic, hands-on learning environment that I will never forget.

Q3. When you were very young, can you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up?

When I was very young, I dreamed of being many things—like most children do. I aspired to be a fashion designer, a lawyer, a president, a princess, and even a teacher. While these dreams might seem vastly different in hindsight, they all share a common thread: my desire to make a meaningful impact.

Q4. As you got older, did those aspirations change? If so, in what way?

While my specific career aspirations evolved as I got older, my core desire to make an impact remained. As I was exposed to different teachings, subjects, students of varying backgrounds, my passion to make an impact only grew—not just to my immediate network, but to the wider community.

Q5. If you stayed at NAIS until graduation from Year 13, what support and encouragement were you given by your teachers to follow your dreams in terms of career/life choices?

Completing my education at NAIS through Year 13 was crucial in shaping my career path and life direction. The rigorous coursework required daily dedication, but I believe that a good education should always challenge its students. I was encouraged to think outside the box and strive for my full potential. Not only did I aim for academic excellence, but I was also encouraged to embrace opportunities extra-curricularly and socially. The genuine bonds I formed with my teachers were invaluable; they truly cared about my growth. The supportive relationships with my peers and mentors made my experience at NAIS one that I fondly reflect on, as it inspired me to be my best self, long after graduation.

Q6. What job/career do you have now? And is it the same as your aspirations when at school?

Five years after graduating from NAIS, I am proud to be the Associate Director of Development for the Alumni Association at the University of Michigan. In this role, I work alongside a passionate Development team to raise private support for exceptional programs that assist students, alumni, and friends of the University in various aspects of life, including career and educational programming, scholarship support, and community building. I have the privilege of turning individuals’ philanthropic dreams into reality, ultimately supporting those who need it most.

One initiative I’m particularly proud to fundraise for is our LEAD Scholars Program— it offers merit-based scholarships and empowering community support to students who exemplify the program’s four pillars: leadership, excellence, achievement, and, most importantly diversity. Having experienced the transformative power of education at both NAIS and UofM, I am deeply committed to ensuring that other students have the opportunity to achieve their dreams and personal growth through exceptional educational experiences as well.

Q7. How do you feel NAIS Pudong helped you get closer to your current career/job?

NAIS played a crucial role in guiding me toward my current career in many meaningful ways. The school consistently encouraged my peers and me to strive for excellence and to be our best selves, fostering a culture of ambition and hard work. This foundation has been invaluable in my professional journey, as the development field requires not only passion but also a commitment to representing the institution effectively.

Additionally, NAIS instilled in me the importance of community engagement and service. I learned the value of collaboration and the impact of building meaningful relationships, both of which are essential in fundraising and development. The skills I developed in communication, leadership, and critical thinking have all been vital in my role today, enabling me to advocate effectively for the programs I believe in and to connect with donors who share our vision.

Reflecting on my school aged aspirations, I dreamed of a career that allowed me to make a positive impact. While my path has evolved, it aligns closely with my original goals of contributing to meaningful causes and making a difference.

Q8. Do you have any tips for any of our students who might want to also explore your current/planned career?

For any student interested in a career in fundraising and development, I encourage you to immerse yourself in this dynamic field early on. Networking with development career professionals will help you engage with those who are already impacting communities. Be open to learning from others, and remember to find a passion and follow it! Confidence in your abilities will also never fail to be one of my favorite tips!

I also recommend seeking out volunteer opportunities or internships related to development work. This hands-on experience will deepen your understanding and allow you to see first-hand the joy that comes from providing aid and building communities. There’s nothing quite like seeing the smiles on individuals’ faces when you help them access the support and resources they need. Being part of such impactful work is not only fulfilling but also a powerful reminder of the positive change we can create together!
