Talking about Family

This week in the Early Years, the children experienced making the Vietnamese traditional desert ‘Floating Cake’. The tradition celebrates the memories of our ancestors and for very young children, it is an opportunity to talk about families and the people special to them. The children were able to taste the delicious, sweet food and share with their friends.

Make Mathematical Concepts Concrete

In Maths, students explore volume and capacity through engaging hands-on activities. They use sand, water, and blocks to measure capacity, helping them gain a better understanding of the maximum volume of containers with different sizes. As they pour water into cups, students observe and describe the water level using terms such as full, nearly full, empty, and nearly empty, then compare the volumes of the cups. These activities not only make mathematical concepts more accessible but also help develop their observation and analytical skills.

Building Confidence and Communication

Quiz Quiz Trade is a fun and interactive game that helps Year 2 students improve their speaking skills in all subjects. Each student gets a question card, quizzes a partner, listens to the answer, and then trades cards. This process continues with new partners, building confidence, communication, and learning in an engaging way. It makes lessons enjoyable and effective!

In the Maths lesson on measuring liquid volume, students actively engaged in hands-on learning using measuring jugs with millilitres (ml) and litres (L). They worked together enthusiastically, carefully pouring and measuring coloured water while discussing their observations. Collaboration was evident as they helped each other hold the containers steady and ensured accurate readings. Their excitement and curiosity made the learning process more interesting as they practiced real-world applications of volume measurement in a fun way.

🦏 Protecting Wildlife with Wild Rhino Vietnam 🌿

The "Land, Sea, and Sky" theme celebration was a wonderful opportunity for Year 4 students at BVIS Hanoi to showcase their impressive achievements from the “Save Wild Animals with Wild Rhino Vietnam” project. The students expressed their creativity through paintings, 3D models, and stop-motion STEAM projects while also exploring animal adaptations through scientific experiments. Additionally, they authored and presented their own stories at the Book Café, spreading awareness about wildlife conservation. The most outstanding works were submitted to Wild Rhino Vietnam and evaluated by Mark Bell from the Wilderness Foundation Africa. Their creativity and dedication reflect a strong commitment to protecting endangered animals! 🌍✨

Constructing Stop-Motion Animations

This week the children began constructing their stop-motion animations. They are using the class story from their Literacy unit. In small groups, they converted the narrative into a storyboard. They are now using plasticine or paper and card to animate a stop-motion animation to bring the story to life. Finally, they will add a voiceover of the characters and a narrator before putting all the parts together to make a class movie. We are excited to share this with our adults at our exit point next Tuesday morning!

Y6 Transition

It has been a busy week for our Y6 students preparing to move into Secondary in August. Our transition programme incorporates all aspects of school life from academic and curricular to social and service learning.

Last Friday, we welcomed Y6 parents to hear from Ms Phuong Anh (Head of Year 7) and Mr Ian Powell (Assistant Head Teacher from August) at our coffee morning. This focused on the pastoral elements of transition and parents were able to hear about the supports which are in place for our students to help them settle into secondary school life.

Year 6 and Year 7 helped maintaining Phuc Tan Forest Park

This week, under our collaboration with Think Playgrounds and local women committee, Year 6 and Year 7 have helped maintaining the Phuc Tan Forest Park at Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. Students from both years have engaged with different activities such as: litter picking, fixing garden and playground’s equipment, painting. We are so happy to see our students really stepping out of their comfort zone, getting to know each other, bringing their focus and best skill to finish the tasks they might have not done before, even enjoying their snacks together at scenic forest park next to Long Bien bridge.

This hands-on approach gave them opportunity to learn the importance of empathy, teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills. It also encourages them to take ownership of their learning through service while developing a commitment to making a positive impact.

Year 7 Science

In a recent Y7 science class, students had an exciting opportunity to explore the fascinating world of chemistry through a hands-on activity: creating a test tube rainbow! Using their knowledge of acids, alkalis, and indicators, students engaged in a vibrant experiment that not only demonstrated chemical reactions but also showcased the beauty of science.
Each student was tasked with mixing various solutions, using pH indicators to observe how different substances interacted. By carefully balancing acids and alkalis, they were able to produce a stunning array of colors within their test tubes, resulting in a spectacular rainbow effect. This experiment provided a visual and interactive way to understand the concepts of pH, chemical reactions, and the role of indicators in scientific experiments.
